I have no personal experience, but my folks stayed there for awhile back in the 90's when they were "homeless", as they like to say. They had sold their house in Oklahoma and were having one built in Destin. They talk about Ft.Pickens all the time, and always said it was a nice place to be.

Back in the late 90s we stated at Pensacola Beach in a motel and visited the park's Fort Pickens and stayed on the beach for the day. We didn't tour the campground because we didn't camp back in those days. Very nice. I would camp there. The campground isn't directly on the beach but has electric and water hookups.

Love Pickens

We stayed a Ft Pickens in mid January 2016 and are going again this January 2017. The CG is across from the beach with CG A the closest. They do book up so we already have our January 2017 reservations. The only problem is if there is a storm they will evacuate the CG. The road coming in is thru a narrow part of the peninsula and water and sand will cover it so there is no way out.

If you go and like seafood a trip to Joe Patti's is a must. I am from New Orleans and have never seen a seafood market this size. Every kind of seafood you can even imagine. There must be at least 40 employees.

Have fun!

I have camped at Ft Pickens many times and like it. Many of the campsites are open without many trees but there are a few in A and I believe C with trees. The beach is nice. If you have bikes there are lots of access areas other than just across from A. There is also Bay access which is nice if you have kayaks. The only downsides to me are the threat of evacuation and that it is about a 20 minute drive from campground out of the park. I like Peg Leg Petes in Pensacola Beach. There are many good restaurants in downtown Pensacola. Darma Blue may be my current favorite.
