Take away one more beach campground

McGrath State Beach will close indefinitely Ventura County Star

This article was in the Ventura Newspaper. Yes, the State of California is falling into the ocean, only it isn't a earthquake, it is the cesspool in Sacramento.

Thanks for the link, sad state of affairs. California is not alone, though, we've noticed our Washington State parks going downhill for years. Oregon seems to have a handle on finances; their parks are some of the finest!

This is happening all over the country with State Parks. In those states (I am familiar with Illinois in particular) where mismanagement (my words and belief) has led to fiscal hardship and HUGE tax increase (IL had a 66% income tax hike last 1/1 !!!!) we are seeing lesser utilized campgrounds closing. Unfortunately, those lesser used ones are the ones I like!!!! No crowds, etc. I haven't heard much about the Feds, but I gotta believe they are on the chopping block.

I have heard that Oregon uses some of their lottery money to help finance the state parks. Don't know if that is really the case, but that could be one reason that their parks do well. They do keep their parks nice.

California....

Four nights, mid week in April, at Silver Strand State Park, a blacktop parking lot along the beach just north of the Mexican border, nothing nearby, with no water, no electricity, no dump facility, dry camp only, no tents, costs $200. That's $50 per night.

The same four nights at Pismo Coast Village in Pismo Beach, very friendly and helpful staff, water, electric, sewer, cable, WIFI, pool, laundry, store, beach just over the dune, town within walking distance, $184, that's $46 per night.

And, they make a profit!

Hello California

This pretty much tells the tale, Jim. I often wonder "who's driving the bus?"
