I've posted about Lake Fairfax Park in the Northern VA area. You can search on that. It's very good for being so close to DC.

Stay away from Ed Allan's CG near williamsburg.
Be sure to take the Jamestown ferry (free)

We'll be headed to DC for the Cherry Blossom Rally in a few weeks... I'll report back when we return. So many great things to see and do... many of them free, compliments of the US taxpayer.

Some places

Here are some suggestions...

We did our WDCU Installation Rally at Newport News Park, in Newport News, VA - really close to Williamsburg. It's a great park and nice sites for camping. It's one of the largest municipal parks in the country. Worth a visit if you ask me.

Newport News Park: Newport News Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism - Virginia

Now, up near DC, I think the site where the CBR is hosted also is a CP spot if you're a WBCCIer. It's a nice spot not too far from the metro. Otherwise, there is also the Travel Trailer Village in Dumfries, Va as well - south of the city.

Up in Gettysburg, I recommmend the Little Drummer Boy campground.

Gettysburg Cabins, Accommodations PA - Drummer Boy Camping Resort

Are you related to the military at all? If so, there is a nice campground at Quantico and another over in Annapolis too. The Quantico one is on a Resevoir located next to the FBI Academy.... and very remote.

Good luck.

Rob

we did that trip from Atlanta to D.C. Stayed at a Corps of Engineers lake park in NC ( I will try to get the name if interested), then at the KOA in Shenandoah. Both were very nice and very near the highway. We also went on to Hershey Park, PA, and came back down the shore thru Maryland Shore to VA Beach and across NC again to home. Great trip.

We never ended up staying there, but when requesting similar advice, we had been referred by several forum members to the Harpers Ferry KOA for a place to stay while visitng DC.

And of course the Shenandoah Valley is absolutely stunning, but don't have specific camping recommendations.

Also

Also,

If you do the Eastern Shore, and head back down through NC, I highly recommend doing the ferrys that are in Northern NC. They are free and are a fun way to hope from the Cape Hattereas area down the eastern part of NC.
