suggestions for fiddlin' trip to Asheville from Austin?

hi Airstreamers,

I'm planning on taking a road trip in May to the Asheville area. I love to find people and places to play my fiddle with (not very accomplished but love jamming). I work remotely and try to have an electric connection at the campgrounds, but do travel with my own internet connection. Any suggestions for my travels would be wonderful.I may also cruise up to the Floyd VA area afterwards from Asheville. Most of my travels are always out west, so this will be a first. Thank you:-)

Check out Old Fort, NC and Pumpkintown, SC. There are regular Jams there, and at Hagood Mill in Pickens, SC the 3rd Saturday of each month.

Floyd VA

Just north of the border by about 50 miles if that. And 15 miles north of there is an Airstream only park, Virginia Highland Haven.

Floyd has bluegrass playing every Friday & Saturday night, plus lots of people hanging out in the streets making music.

Just off the Blue Ridge Parkway.

NC is nice But Virginia is for Lovers.

In asheville/Fletcher check out Farm Supply on Hendersonville Rd. & Cane Creek! Every Fri & Sat. night! Also Mothers Day weekend at Cades Cove (Great Smoky Mtn. National Park) where we will be camping has a gathering all day that Saturday at the mill halfway around the loop with people picking and you just walk and listen to different ones! Also they hang out and play at their campsites! I will check some other things for you too!

Cades Cove

It is first come first grab in Cades Cove! Never had a problem getting a site! We usually get there on the Wed. or Thursday! The weekend after we are going into Townsend at Misty River Campground for a Vintage Camper Rally and would love to have you pick for us there too! It is close to Cades Cove! During the week between the 2 there is a Vintage Car show all week in Pigeon Forge!

Suzi,

First of all, Asheville, like Austin, is one of the coolest places in America. There's so many musicians there that you won't even realize that you've left town.

Aunt Gertie's Hideaway, a few miles out of town, is the cleanest, best run RV park that I've ever been to. Sites terraced up the side of a mountain but the spectacular view and friendly hosts make the pull up there very much worthwhile.

Music everywhere. The Grey Eagle and the Emerald Lounge downtown are two to see. The Orange Peel is the biggest club, hosting national and international acts.

The White Horse, about a 10 minute drive to Black Mountain, is filled with fiddlers and banjo pickers and has a great sound system.

The Admiral, a great restaurant in a nondescript cinder block building in the wage-earning part of town ( Haywood Street) is the equal of anything you can find in Austin, probably better. Local food. I had my first ever taste of ramps there. They were picked that morning in the nearby mountains.

Asheville is a great, great town.

Sergei
