There's a county or city park in Houghton, MI in the UP that makes a nice base for UP exploring. Right on river and nice bike/walking path to downtown which is maybe less than a mile. There's a great restaurant there that serves Finnish pancakes. Michigan Tech is in Houghton. Our son goes there so wave to him if you drive by.

In Minnesota, I've heard good things about the Airstream park. Haven't been there yet, but it's on my list.

I've just happened on a campground 45 miles north of Minneapolis.

Minnesota Airstream Park — The Midwest's only Airstream-only RV resort.

Looks like we're partially doing a reverse of your itinerary.

We're spending time at the MN park, and then to the Blackhills week after next.

Thanks,
Perhaps we'll see you on the road. What is your route to SD?

That is a route we travel quite a bit. There is a nice KOA at Devil's Tower. Look up Mobridge SD. There is a nice camp ground just south of town called Indian Creek.

http://www.allstays.com/Campgrounds-details/29374.htm

A little south of that on near Platte Nebraska (not South Platte) is a campground called Snake Creek. Detroit Lakes in northern Minnesota has some really nice Campgrounds. You have a lot of options. You can PM me to refine your search.

If you take a southern route through the UP check out http://www.michigandnr.com/parksandt...=417&type=SPRK

If you stay north: http://www.exploringthenorth.com/tahqua/tahqua.html

If you stay way north Ft Wilkins at Copper Harbor is a winner.

There is a full service RV park between Marquette and Ishepming with a camping world, gas, and stores that we used when we need to do laundry, reprovision, and get online.

Just north of the Mackinaw Bridge on the shore is a convenient park that we've used when the bridge was closed due to high winds.

Lots of options. We are in Ludington Mich. right now. It boasts the nicest state park in the country.

There are too many options to cover.

Grand Marais, MN the city park is fabulous! Mackinaw Mill Campground near Mackinaw City, MI is also wonderful. Good luck with your travels! The Airstream Park in Minnesota is also a winner.

Coming from the west you can hit the city park in Ashland WI, right on the lake. Concur with Copper Harbor, if you need wifi and cable to survive the other campground there is an option to the Fort Wilkins State Park. In Marquette, the Tourist City Park is nice, same goes for Munising City Park but you might consider making reservations. Grand Marais is first come-first served and is super busy this time of year, keeping folks in overflow a night or two not being uncommon. We just did the UP, in London now for some hitch work at Can-Am so have some other insights if you would find the need. Caution though, the mosquito problem is really bad right now, locals say worse in years.
