Suggestion on best Campsites to visit

Hello my name is Livie,

I'm trying to reach out to some fellow airstream owners to to figure out which campsites are the best to visit! I want to take my 9 year old son on his first camping trip... Please comment below with your suggestions, I'd also love to hear about some of the greatest memories spent on your camping trip with family or friends. I want to make his first camping trip worth wild!!!

Thanks Livie

If you can find a campground near Huntsville I am sure he will love the Space Center. Lots of hands on things for a kid.

Come to think about it I think you can camp there.

River Ranch, FL. It's a dude Ranch. Horseback riding, swamp buggies, airboat rides - all the things a 9 year old will love. And the RV sites are beautiful. If you like the shade, ask for a lot in Phase 3. If you want one with a dock, phase 5.

Mt Cheaha State Park is close to you and spectacular in fall. The main attraction will be hiking but if your son is like my kids he'll also enjoy the campfire, s'mores, playground, etc.
If you want more activities, consider Desoto caverns in Childersburg. Very cheesy commercial venture but just what kids ages 5-10 enjoy.
Other state parks in a 2-3 hour drive include Cloudland Canyon in Georgia which would also let you do day trip into Chattanooga for a aquarium and great kids musuem. Ft Mountain in Georgia is also very natural and will be beautiful in fall. Desoto State Park near Ft Payne is another option.
One last really fun option is Stone Mountain near Atlanta. It has a park with attractions for kids and does a fall festival theme and then a winter theme.
And of course there are lots of options if you want to travel south to Florida.

There is a privately owned campground next to Alabama Space and Rocket Center for $21 per night.
Smith Lake in Alabama is a beautiful destination.
Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, and Tennessee all have great state parks, forest service parks, and corps of engineers parks.

We used to take the kids to Moccasin Creek campground in the Georgia Mountains. In the Northeast corner of Ga. Sort of between Clayton and Helen.
Nice flat campground, flat so the kids can ride bicycles. Fishing stream that is stocked with trout for the 12 and under crowd.

Reach out to Ellery Curtis. AKA PharmGeek on Airforums.
He and his wife are 30-something year old Airstreamers with kids in the Birmingham area.

I'd have to answer your question with another question: What's your idea of a great camping experience? We travel about 3 months of the year and meet all sorts of folks. Some are travelers (like us), others bikers, some are "sit around the campsite and sing songs while toasting marshmallows" types, etc, etc. When we bring our 11 year old grandson with us he likes the campsite activities, bike riding and (seasonally) swimming. State parks are our choice to meet his needs and ours.

There are great suggestions above, but to narrow it down you may need to rough out an idea of the activities you and he might enjoy most, then pick based on that.

Regardless, kids, love to camp, nobody here will argue with your choice of how to camp and welcome to our community.

We thoroughly enjoyed Oak Mt.State Park in Peklham. We stopped there on our way to Florida and had a great time.

Depends on what he likes. We took our grandaughters to Noccaloa Falls in Gadsden. They have bike/hike trails, park with train ride, small zoo, mini golf playground equipment and swimming pool. Beside the campground at the Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, there is another called Ditto Landing at the marina on the Tennessee River. Also Monte Sano State park on the mountain.

I use these sites to find a good Campground:

Reserveamerica.com
recreation.gov
Go to Google for the state park site of the state you want to visit.

The Corp of Engineers has great campgrounds.

If you ever come to Mississippi let me know and I will give you a review of the park and let you know whether or not it is a good one.
