Sugarite Canyon State Park,NM

I know i said I was going to wing it when we leave for spring Break, but wife isn't too comfortable with the idea.

So I think this going to be our destination. I know it will probably be cold. Has anyone ever stayed there? I know they full hookups with sewer.

Site 4 is suppose to be nice according to the park Ranger.

I'm coming from the Dallas area. Just wondering if anyone has any advice.

Thank you.

Shane

Shane, I would definitely call that park direct to ask about conditions and hours. I have arrived at NM state parks that claim to be open for the season with 24 hr. access only to find locked gates.

Thank-you for the advice.

I had a rather lenghty conversation with "Greg",directly at the park, and he said to call 3 days prior to get a local weather forecast. He did say they are open year round and a pay box, if noone is there after hours. But the way I have it timed we will be there during daylight hours,...weather permitting.

We stayed here 1 night last July. We camped in the no-amenities area up on the hill, which has the best views. However, the climb up is quite steep and basically a dirt road.

The weather changed very quickly on us, and I thought the motor home was going to end up on its side due to the high winds. Fortunately, we remained upright.

$10/night I think for the dry-camp area. It's scenic area.

I was thinking of staying a night or two up at the scenic area. Test out the International....I have a 4x4 towing a 25 footer. Do you think that would be a problem? Rain and Ice pending of course..also one more question, please Is there at least electricity on the scenic sites?

Thank-you,
Shane

Definately check with the park before going. By the way our new governator has been slashing budgets, I wonder how state parks are going to survive. Our closest park (a veterans memorial) is close to being closed as a state-run adventure and returned to other owners. She doesn't much appreciate providing incentive money for the tourism and film industries, it seems.

More generally, I kind of wonder about a decision to vacation during that time period in the higher elevation areas of northern New Mexico. Maybe Santa Fe (further south from up here). There is a state park just outside of town with good camping as well as nearby COE opportunities. Same applies to the larger Albuquerque area.

If the weather gets bad..we are going with my original plan of just winging it..driving east to the ouichita mountains.

We have stayed there in a full hookup site next to the park host in the summer 3 years ago. It is a nice park and we may go back this summer on our way to Fort Collins, CO. There is some good hiking not too far from the campground and you can drive up to the upper part of the park. I believe you could take a 25' stream up to the upper campground.
