Successful 1st trip.. except for the moto carrier!
Im now back from a 9-10 day outing after a 3 year renovation of my 61 Globetrotter! The old GT performed very well.. Really enjoyed my time with it and in it. Towing it was another story. I know that no one has anything good to say about putting a 250lb motorcycle on a rear carrier of a single axle trailer.. but, i had done it with success with my 69 Safari.. so, I thought it could work with the GT.. Well, it didn't. Im quite sure I wont try that again. At first it seemed ok. Then I got to the old highways.. and the wind. I stopped several times and fussed around with the weight distributing hitch.. and my cargo. I had the fresh tank full, and around 300lbs of cargo piled up in the front.. I couldn't make it tow well.. Squirly at best. Under 50mph.. ok, so thats what I did. I was in no hurry. But still, not very confidence inspiring. Every time it would start swaying, the words from a old school trailer shop guy went thru my head... " you can pee on the rear bumper and change the tongue weight by 5%" ! Having 2 motorcycles with me was a blast tho! I guess next time I will try to get them both in the truck. 700 miles of central and southern Utah, and about the same on my big bike. Hwy 12 is the best!! I will try to post pics again from my phone app.
