Stranded

On Thursday we traveled up to the White Mountains of Arizona to spend the weekend with our flyfishing club. The week before in Phoenix it was 110 degrees and we welcomed the cooler weather we would have at 8200 feet. We arrived at noon and about an hour later it started to snow. The next morning with 16 inches on the ground the 6 trailers that made the trip we cut off from the world. The good news is that the 11 people had plenty of food (steak dinner for 100+). We got another 6 inches the next day, but by then the plow had come in to clear a road out for us. Camping in the snow was a challenge just to keep dry and the inside of my trailer is a total mess (3 dogs playing in the snow). We found that the best cloths to wear in the snow was our fishing waders. The only problem was the felt bottoms of the wader boots keep building up with snow. By the end of the weekend all the snow had melted and we had a total of 40 people show up out of the 100 signed up. The trailer behind mine is Brad's (flyfshr) who showed up late Friday after the roads were plowed.

Great photos. I'm surprised it all melted off that quick, what were the temps after the storm?

Wow! That's incredible. Thanks for posting. Did the news happen to say how often something like this has occurred? Was it a record breaker?

Very cool. Lots of people don't believe me when I tell them I've snow-skied in Arizona.

How did those steak dinners for 100 go down, pretty smooth?

After the storm the tempertures were going up every day. When we left Monday morning it was 55 degrees, sunny and very windy. Hawley Lake is very remote and does not get much news coverage. The closest reporting town is Pinetop, AZ where they only got a few inches of snow.

Richard,

The scenery is beautiful - what a neat surprise. But did you guys catch any fish?

Did not get as much time on the water as I had hoped for. I had to tow my float tube down to the water on the snow. I did catch a few nice Rainbows.

Wow, what a neat story. Cool pics too. It was mostly overcast and rainy where I was. Sounds like you had a good weekend.

Cowabunga. How did you keep the pipes from freezing so you could have water inside the trailer?

So, is a snow shovel a new entry for the "if I only thought to bring..." thread?
