Stopover Rec between Jacksonville, FL and Key West

If you needed to stop over for one night between Jax and Key West (December timeframe), where would you stay? You all provide the best suggestions on this type of topic. Thanks in advance.

We have found that traveling in Florida in the winter months is not like other places we travel. Most of the campgrounds are booked with seasonal campers and there is little left for overnight stays. Even places like KOAs require a weekly commitment.

We are also traveling to the keys in December and have found overnight spots in several of the Florida State Parks. State parks in Florida can be reserved online and most provide power and water at a reasonable price. Since you are traveling down the East Coast of Florida, another option would be the Airstream Park in Melbourne, FL.

Land Yacht Harbor in Melbourne usually has a few spots available for short term. The office closes at 2:00 pm and on weekends but I believe you can pay the parker if you arrive after hours.

NB: No pets at all.

Many campgrounds along the coast, but a good midway stop would be Phipps Park Campground in Stuart FL. This is where I-95 and FL Turnpike cross. You can take 95 to here but want to switch to Turnpike going south from Palm Beach past Miami. It'll cost a few bucks, but less traffic and craziness.

Your route will be different, but our trip to Key West last year, we overnighted in the parking lot of the Cracker Barrel just on the south side of Ocala FL. Was safe and quiet. The next evening, we had a reservation for overnight stay at Collier-Seminole State Park just outside of Naples Fl. We used this stop to hit the grocery/liquor stores and fill up with fuel. It's a nice scenic drive to Key West. Leave early enough to arrive in Key West, get setup and then head to Mallory Square for a beverage and enjoy the beautiful sunset. Be safe and enjoy the drive.

Be careful when you drive through Miami, try not to do it during the rush hours. The locals see the use of turn signals as a sign of weakness, and will pounce unmercifully!

If you set your trip up so that it happens mid-week, campgrounds should be available. I like Long Point Park and Campground, near Sebastian. You can camp right on the water, with nice sunsets and lots of birds.

You could come down I95 to just north of the Jupiter area, and stay at Jonathan Dickinson State Park. That would keep you on the east coast and it would be near the halfway point. It's a nice state park.

Key West............why? You have to pass up a lot of good water just to get to people craziness. Whatever......

For and over night just plan out where you'd want to stop and do a RV park search to find an opening with power. Don't be surprised it does get chilly here.

When we go down to the Everglades we often stop around Vero Beach so we can take a little time and paddle Blue Cypress Lake.....it is the mating area for LOTS of Ospreys. But that really doesn't happen till March-April.

The full southern migration is on from now till January. So reservations is a good idea.

For overnight stops like you've described our go-to places are Cracker Barrel, Dick's Sporting Goods, Bass Pro Shops and similar "parking lots". Sounds like all you want to do is get off the road, get some sleep, wake up the next day and get on the road. These kinds of places are at almost every exit so you can stop an hour earlier than planned or drive an hour longer than planned without the constraint of a reservation.

If you do opt for a retail parking lot be sure to check with the manager in advance.

Cool Stop over in FLA.... Don't forget those cheap sunglasses

I second the vote for Long Point Park. It is part of the Brevard County Rec District which has a website for reservations.
https://www.brevardfl.gov/ParksRecreation

It is off A1A so it has good access to beaches and the Indian River Lagoon. Also right down the road is Sebastian Inlet a Fla. State Park which unfortunately is full almost ever day but worth checking on.

A little farther south and close to the I-95/Fla Turnpike interchange in Ft Pierce is Savannas Recreation Area which is a St. Lucie County park. That website is:
https://www.stlucieco.gov/department...ecreation-area
There is also a KOA campground in teh area and if you want to get started on your sun tan you could check out Sunnier Palms Nudist Park
Good luck

Disney Fort Wilderness

I have to say even for adults you should stop at Disney Fort Wilderness for a day or two. We love it there and the campground is one of the nicest campgrounds you can stay at. Lots to do within Fort Wilderness and must on anyones list.

We have travelled to Fantasy Fest annually for the past 10 years, never thought past the interstate rest stops... in Fla. they are very good..., and never had a problem. Idling big rigs can be an irritation, but the areas are staffed and patrolled, and for us non-retirees it is still the destination more than the journey, 500+ mile days, in at 9, out by 6. Also, 2 people have 6 arms, do the math. Many on this forum vociferously disagree, to each their own. I think I can count the times we have used an en-route campground on one hand in all our travels.

We overnight at the Miccosukee casino north of Homestead. From there, on a good day, it's 4 hours to KW
