As Bob suggested, more date/timing details might help IMO. Any other features to note, like year, extra awnings, antennas, and so forth? Tire blowout was on curb/street side?

Are the police checking the casino's video?

What a drag for your friends!

Thanks for the details. Can your friends ask the casino for the video? Any chance they spent the night as overnight paying guests there? That might prompt the casino to be more helpful IMO.

Have they gotten their insurance company involved? That might kick things into gear also. A local field adjuster might have good connections with the PD too. Also, documenting everything in emails is a good idea.

I thought that all vehicles had to have insurance to receive plates from the DMV? Maybe none for theft?

Your vehicle insurance covers liability when towing any trailer. Maybe you need to show that to the DMV? I don't remember. Trailer insurance is just for damage/theft. Ouch.

Vehicles ? Yes, liability related.
Trailers.....not so much.

Comprehensive coverage isn't required on either.

I knew someone who had a trailer stolen like this while on a trip. Comprehensive wouldn't cover it because it was unhitched from the tow vehicle when stolen. We checked his policy, and yes that was a stipulation.... Not to be unhitched to be covered except while on his own property!
Check the fine print!
I talked to my agent and he had heard of this before!

Thanks for the good comments about the "fine print" of trailer insurance!

I have emailed my insurance company.

Hi

When the *only* thing that people look at when shopping for insurance is the price .... indeed you will have companies supplying the bare bones / least coverage policy. There are many many threads here about "I'm looking for insurance on the AS". Pretty much the only two considered are low price and how to get a proper value for the trailer.

Weird as it may seem, in my case the trailer when unhitched is personal property and it's on my homeowners policy.

I think that is our situation -- waiting to hear from the company. Are your property coverages different, however, for "on-premises" damage/theft vs. "off-premises" when the trailer is at a campground for instance [and not hitched to the TV]?

Lots of fine print to check!

Thanks,

Peter

Imagine the difficulties as a full-timer....
I insure my Classic for an agreed $150k. If I ever experienced a loss, that still wouldn't compensate me for the cost of replacement, despite receipts for more than that!
It's a racket for sure!

So it turns out that the comprehensive side of our auto/trailer policy would cover the theft of the trailer, in any US location, whether or not it is hitched to our van tow vehicle.

Good to know! Thanks again for the discussion.

Good luck to your friends, AN13.

As you can imagine they are devastated!

Imagine how violated they must feel!

I keep thinking about the mess the crowbar on the door will make...

I emailed my agent as well and got the same answer.

Feel horrible for the owners who got their trailer stolen.

All the comments throughout these threads that say things like, get locks - and - good insurance - are important (and no intent here to rub salt in a painful wound). While the odds may be low, the loss is significant and really something someone shouldn’t have to bear alone. Even with exclusions, limitations, and deductibles, having some help to get through something like this is critical. I hope their trailer is returned with little to no damage. [emoji20]
