States Visited Maps
I've been wonderin'.......
What is your criteria for checking off a state on your States Visited Map ?
Do you have to stay a night in that state ? Stay two, or just drive thru ?
Texas is a BIG place. I feel funny saying " yeah, I've been to Texas" when I've only really seen hundreds of miles from my window and a couple dusty ol' bars for instance.
Should you stay a day and see something significant or historical to qualify ? Stop and buy a souvenir and send a postcard ? Make a new friend, or is a fill up and a cup of coffee at the local diner OK ?

We are checking them off if we have camped in the state in our trailer. That is just the way we want to look at it.

Yes, everyone seems to have different guidlines and ours used to be we had to camp in the state to earn it. We have since changed the rules and we now need to ______ in the state while camping now that we are married. Perhaps we need to add a new map to the wall of the bedroom!

Yea! And what did you think I meant? It can be 'wash the dishes', 'start a campfire' or what have you. I don't need my warning meter to go up!
And yes, its Rick

You bought the map so I guess you can set any criteria you want.

I thought the official requirement is the same as the mile high club. If you satisfy the criteria, whatever it is, at the 4 corners monument do you get New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Colorado?

No, none of those answers fit - it's only one ______, and those have more than one word. Can you give us a clue??
To answer the thread - my take on it - spend one night in trailer, get a state. But, you can do what you want.

I thought a states "visited" meant states visited, not camped in, not done ______ in or anything else. I guess though it can be any rule you choose. You could do a three color tier map and progressively upgraded the state color from visited, camped in to _______.

I have asked this question to the guys at the local RV store, a few SOB owners, and even another Airstream owner... everyone has a different stance. One guy said he will only apply a sticker if it is his destination state, another says if he passes through he claims that state, another said that if he can see the state from his window he checks it off. We use the rule of sleep there and the state is yours... guess a nap counts as sleeping. I have been collecting vintage water decals of the states and plan to apply them to the inside of the door within the door. I have quite a few of locations that one cannot sleep at. For those our rule is the full tour must be taken and a picnic must be performed in leu of sleeping there. I like the idea of the fornication map though... of course, it would need the stipulation of "while inside the Airsream".

Now you tell me! If I followed that rule I would have three additional states. Inside is much more private!

Getting ready to add Florida into my "States Visited" map next week, leaving here on New Years Day, then hitting the Can Opener Rally in the Florida panhandle next weekend and then on to Key West for the rest of Jan... We have been down to Key West before, but this will be the first trip with the Airstream.
My criteria for adding a state to my states visited is "if the trailer goes thru the state being towed by my truck then the sticker goes on." I'll admit that it is not a very difficult criteria, but it is nice and straight forward and easy enough to determine yes/no. Plus, I have repeatedly told my wife that when the map is full, that means we have to buy another Airstream !!! I know she is figuring that maybe we will get Alaska, but there is no way we will ever get Hawaii... (but I am thinking that there must be a car ferry or something from Los Angeles.....)
Anyway, one other thing I do is to trace out the approximate route we take across the state so that while I have been "in" a particular state, I try to show whereabouts I was and that no, I haven't been to everywhere in the state. I trace out the road using a "metallic silver" sharpie pen. as shown.
At any rate, I have my map on the curb side near the hot water heater and hopefully in the closeup pics you can see my highway tracings as to the actual route taken. Just over 15,000 miles in the last 2 years.
best regards, Dave & Shari
