Springfield IL and Hannibal MO suggestions

We're looking for camping suggestions for Springfield, IL and Hannibal, MO. Electricity and water hookups would be nice but are not required.

We'll be visiting the Dana House and Lincoln sites in Springfield and would like to be close in to the city. Does anyone have knowledge of Riverside Park Campground or Waggin' Tails at the fair grounds?

Any recommendation for the Hannibal area, especially something on the Mississippi?

As far as Hannibal goes, you might check out Mark Twain Cave Campground is one I have stayed at. Here is a link. main There are sites with lots of shade and some in full sun. My advice in the dead of summer is to ask for a shaded site.

I can't think of anything on the river directly. There is a nice restaurant across from the entrance of the campground. From there you get a great view of the river.

Mark Twain state park unfortunately is not that close to Hannibal. Stay away from Indian Joe's campground which is right next to a dual highway. High noise factor.

I've camped a couple of times in Springfield. One was the KOA which is somewhat surrounded by corn fields. The other was Double J campground. This one is close to Interstate 55. Neither campground was memorable in my opinion. Both offer full hookups, pool etc.

Thanks for the info, Jack.

Mark Twain Cave sounds like a good choice for the Hannibal area and I'll call Waggin' Tails and Riverside today for information.

Springfield IL KOA country roads

We just spent a weekend at the Springfield, IL KOA. It is out in the country and may be a bit more of a country road drive than you want to make back and forth into Springfield.

Here's a link that we've found helpful as we've researched campgrounds RV Park Reviews :: Home We don't rely on the site reviews alone yet have found them helpful as we make our decisions.

We never tire of going through the Dana Thomas house in Springfield. It is amazing that technically the project was a "remodel" of a much smaller existing house. Enjoy!

Thanks for the link Mrs. Macamper. The reviews convinced us to look beyond Mr. Lincoln's.

I called Waggin' Tails, and as the name implies it is a dog rescue establishment across from the fairgrounds. Did however find information on camping at the fairgrounds. They have lots of sites with hookups and gated security, but I've not yet been able to get beyond the answering machine. Guess I'll keep trying, I have a few more days.

Lake Springfield is Beautiful, and that would be gorgeous to stay at.

Heading to Springfield this Thursday....maybe I'll check it out.

I'm not aware of any campgrounds on the lake Steve.

Steve,

The fairgrounds campground attendant returned my call this afternoon. When I called this morning a BIG storm was going through Springfield. She was on the floor of her rocking and rolling RV with her dog. They are fine, but a number of trees came down. "Biggest storm I've ever been through."

Hope the weather improves through the week, as we will be camping there Friday and Saturday nights. Stop by, Steve, if you are still in town.
