SOUTH DAKOTA---On the Way Home AZ-WI

Our first long adventure in our first Airstream 25 is set for early May as we head home to Egg Harbor (Door County), Wisconsin from Phoenix. We're planning to take the "long way" via South Dakota. Custer SP and Badlands NP are on the stop list. Any advice of experience is most welcomed as we have never been to SD. Advice on stops en-route welcomed too!

We stayed at a SP near Sioux Falls last year and really liked it. The falls in Sioux Falls is well worth a visit. Yes, the town (Sioux Falls) is named for the falls (Sioux Falls).

Don't (or do) miss Wall Drug. Minuteman Missile silo tour is good. Lots a Lewis & Clark history along the Missouri and old forts. Also Pipestone, across the border in Minnesota is interesting.

Stops in Wyoming & South Dakota

Chamberlain, South Dakota is nice. American Creek Campground is right on the banks of the beautiful Missouri River. A very nice Municipal Park

Ditto on the City Park in Sioux Falls. Very nice

Keystone, South Dakota - Black Hills Historic Railroad.

Buffalo Wyoming - Indian Campground is nice. The Jim Gatchel Museum in town is very good as well as the Historic Occidental Hotel.

Powell, Wyoming - Heart Mountain Japanese Internment Camp Museum.
Also a very nice, safe, city park there in Powell that offers free, over night dry camping. They have a dump station, super clean restrooms, picnic areas and grills.

Thermopolis, Wyoming - Hot Springs State Park, the world's largest mineral, hot springs.
The Thermopolis, Wy. to Shoshoni, Wy. by the Wind River Canyon drive is spectacular.

I second the city campground in Spearfish, plus it's right next to Spearfish Canyon Road, a must see. We will be at the city campground for seven weeks from late July to early September.

Cody, Wyoming has one of the most extensive weapons display I have ever seen anywhere including firearms.

South Dakota thoughts

Chamberlain, SD is a special place. If you are going east to west, you cross the Missouri there. Once across I always get a feeling on being on the ocean. Rolling hills for miles. And if it is green rather than parched, the illusion is even better.

One thing to observe is NOT to take the AS through the Needles Highway. The tight turns and switchbacks will be hellacious.

Seriously, watch Kevin Costner in Dances with Wolves. It was filmed in the area of Spearfish.

We always stay at an out of the way place called Nemo Guest Ranch between Deadwood and Rapid City. Great little bar/grill with a tree growing through the roof.

There is a KOA at one of the entrances to Badlands. It is worth staying there. We unhitched and drove through the prairies on forest service roads nearby to get a good look at the roads less traveled.
