South Carolina ideas

hope everyone is having a good sunday

we are trying to plan 8-10 day trip to the lowcountry of South Carolina
so far we are thinking of staying on Hilton Head and travelling out from there
since we do not tow a car It appears Hilton Head offers reasonable car rental rates along with a good rv park.

as I said we are in the early stages of planning and would appreciate input from forum members with local advice

thanks in advance

Hi,
You don't say where you are from or what kind of trip you would like to have.
If you want to play golf, walk on the beach, eat at fancy restaurants and look at expensive vacation homes then Hilton Head is perfect.

If you like hiking, you might enjoy taking the ferry out to Daufuskie Island, (next island to the South) and hiking around. Once rich with plantations producing indigo, rice and sea island cotton, modern Daufuskie Island, SC is home to the spectacular Daufuskie Island Club Resort & Breathe Spa, its two residential communities, Melrose Plantation and Bloody Point Club, as well as the private neighborhood, The Haig Point Club. Among these modern additions stand relics of the Daufuskie Island, SC past, threaded together by an interesting history and more than one bumpy dirt road.

If you prefer a more low key environment, you might want to camp at Hunting Island State Park to the North. You could visit Beaufort on your way there or back.

If you visit Savannah, GA be sure to enjoy their famous She Crab Soup! The old brick cotton warehouses along the river have been turned into shops, bars and restaurants.

If you visit Charleston, be sure to take the carriage ride around the area "South of Broad St." and along the Battery. Magnolias is a nice restaurant there. You can take a tour boat out to Fort Sumpter in the Charleston harbor where the first battle of the civil war was fought. One of the Charleston banks had the first submarine used in warfare on display.

I would second visiting Charleston and Savannah.

Depending on your interests and time available, if you head north you could hit the Outer Banks (NC), or if you head south hit the Okeefanokee (sp?)Swamp (southeast GA).

Weather has the potential to be a factor - hurricanes have been known to visit this coastline, but you would have ample notice.
