Oh, I've decided to wait until the beginning of May to get the (always topless) MG out.

Another potential upside to all the snow is that fire danger should be comparatively low at least for part of the summer .

But they'll be warning us all the grass that grew because of more water will be a fire hazard. If there were no water, they'd warn us about the fire hazard. Every year is a fire hazard.

Three fires in Colorado today with the high winds. I thought there might be one nearby, but the winds have been blowing so much dust around I can't see more than 5 miles. Normally I can see 40 or 50 miles. It should make an amazing sunset.

Gotta stop—Deadliest Catch is on.

Yep, at least up here in the mountains. Unfortunately, central and southern New Mexico didn't get as much, and the springtime high winds have really dried things out. There have already been some big fires down there, and there's one burning today in the Manzano Mountains. The news report from a few minutes ago said that the fire is now about 200 acres and growing.

Actually all this moisture at the beginning of the growing season is bad news for fires. Stuff will grow fast.

I am going to take the silence here on this thread to mean that more snow is melting than falling in the Rockies........

In case you were wondering where the melting snow was going just check out my basement. No fun I guess we will spent the summer replacing the drain tiles to a home with a full 8 ft basement. On a bright side, my hubby can sit in the A/S and organize our misadventures in mud.

Just returned from La Plata Canyon this morning. Reached Snowslide Campground using 4WD low range over a foot of snow/ice. I'm guessing mid June for access with a trailer.

Pagosa Springs area

Rodney
Just returned from the Pagosa Springs area, We drove up Piedra Rd as far as the Piedra River trailhead. Snow still on the north sides and behind heavy timber areas. Roads are dry campgrounds aren't open yet but lower ones are mostly clear. Trails are muddy from all the snow melt. Another month and things should be great.

It's been warm (60's) and windy the past few days. The wind really eats the snow and I can see the snow line going up the West Elks. It's got to be above 8,000' by now, maybe closing in on 9,000'.

Unfortunately, the FS does not open a lot of campgrounds until long after the snow is gone. They are closing a lot of them permanently and you'd have to call them to make sure what is what—Colorado state parks are open all year and by next month or even now, all the campsites should be available. They can have a range from boondock sites (not isolated, just no services) to full hookups.

My house sits at 9200' and we're almost to the end of the snow melt in my yard, I'm hoping by the end of the week. I got off at the top of the Vail pass today to check out the Shrine pass road for a boon docking rally in June. Unfortunately the pass was still closed, but I'd guess at around 2-3 feet of snow at 11,000 ft. Unless we get dumped on this week I would guess the snow will be to the point that the Shrine pass is open by early next week. It's amazing how fast the snow will melt off in the right conditions a few weeks ago I had at least 10' of snow in my yard. I don't think any camping in this area will be delayed due to snow. The bad news is that most of the campgrounds in Summit county are closed this season to remove pine beetle killed trees. What campgrounds that are open are due open on Memorial weekend.

The temperature last sunday was 79. The temperature today was 42. The temperature yesterday morning was 18. It was snowing at 2 pm this afternoon. Several feet of new snow in the cascades this weekend. Estamated 40 feet of snow on Chinook pass as I write this. If you'r comming to Washington wait till?????? It snowed in Seattle yesterday. But it might be 80 by next week. The orchards are in shock. So are the people. Drove by my favorite mountain lake last wed. Elevation 4,500 feet. Can't see the lake...or the camp area....must be 10 feet of snow on level at least. NO water shortage this year for irrigation. I think its spring???? Well like I said it was 79 last?? sunday.

For the last 2 weeks I have had a Jackson Hole Web Cam open full time. It's been amazing watching the retreat of the snow. It's almost gone in the town square and the mountians to the east.
