Sliders Unite!!

I found out through our AS dealer that there are only 84 total AS units with slide outs. We need to have our own thread to discuss the merits of having a slide. What do you say out there?

For anyone that needs the hardware to join your group we just drove by Oasis Airstream (a former dealer) in Tucson, AZ and he has two slide outs on the lot for sale.

Only 84? I would have thought there were more. We've only had ours for a few months, but we really like it. So much more room than our previous 31'.

Most of the questions I get when someone see's our slide are:

1) Does it leak? No, ours has never leaked

2) I didn't know Airstream made a slide out! Yes, from 2001-2009 sliders were made in 28', 30', 31' and 34' models, I believe all Classics.

3) Isn't it way heavier than an AS w/o a slide? Yes, it is a little heavier, but not by much, about 300 lbs. is what I was told.

4) Is the slide worth that much extra room? For us, it sure makes a big difference.

5) What's the difference in a slide mechanical wise from 2001 to 2009? Absolutely nothing according to the VP of AS. I asked the same question since we bought our 2002 in 2010 and I asked him the question. Apparently, once As developed the electric motivated slide, it never changed.

6) Can I come in and see it? Sure and no, it isn't for sale.

That number (84) can't be correct. There are well over 100 members on the forums that have a slide out in their profile. Slide outs first appeared in 1999 and were available on several different size trailers over the years.

According to my As dealer, they called the factory and asked the question, answer was 84 total, that's all I'm going by. Maybe someone at the Mother Ship can confirm or deny, regardless, the number of sliders is in a vast minority compared to non-sliders.

By the way, is your favorite fly the Goofus or the Adams?

About the all Classic slides...I believe I remember seeing a 28' Safari SO?

It would be interesting to know if the 84 number is in fact true. We have two 34' SO's in our unit, and we only have about 35 members in our unit.

I think that's a reasonable number. That's under one S/O per month, over the span of production. I was told at a factory tour, twenty-something units per month (total production) is going gangbusters for them.

We had 3 S/O's at Alumalina a couple of weeks ago.

Don't have anything to offer or dispute on the numbers, but when I saw my S/O and went in it for the first time, I was hooked.

We have a 2000 34 limited lounge slide. We have been told only 24 units were made with lounge from 2000 to 2004 great floor plan very roomy

I saw a 30' or31' anniversary (with slider) for sale when I was in Tucson just recently. It was parked in an RV Storage and service place on the east side of the hwy about 5 miles north of LazyDays. We actually stopped and looked at it and it looked in good shape.

Just if anyone is looking....

Cheers

Love to hear about the ridiculous tongue weights the slide outs have. How much does the slide out actually move and the extra space provided.

It's just our Airstreams are so heavy already....

Love to see some pics, very curious!

Tounge weights from my '07 manual:

30' S/O 1,050 Lbs.
30' 670 Lbs.
31' 770 Lbs.
34' S/O 1,150 Lbs.
34' 770 Lbs.

Dinette S/O 22" D X 76.5" L X 64" H from a 2008 sales brochure.

The dimensions on the slide don't tell the whole story. You have to step inside, its not huge but it adds room.

I wonder how reliable the slides are.
Slide problems with an SOB are partially responsible for the Airstream purchase.
Why did Airstream stop making the slides?

What I was told that As quit making the S/O due to lack of sales. The industry as a whole adopted the AS slide design mostly with very few modifications. No difference in the slide setup from 1999 to 2009, just a sales thing. I haven't heard of any issues about the slide per se, unless anyone has something to add. Ours has always worked perfect. About the only concern I have is in the future, the awning overhang wearing out and replacement.

We bought our trailer used, and it had set out in the sun on top of a hill in California since new, with the slide out. The slide awning material was bad. So, I called Zipp Dee and ordered a new fabric. It was not what I'd call cheap, and it was not a snap to change, but we got it done. It was one of those things that looked easy, but you do need to read, understand, and follow the instructions. I could do another one very quickly having done one already.

I saw an interior picture of an early model slide, where it appeared there were no electric "paddles" to hold the slide in retracted position. There were manual extension rods between the backside of the slide "fascia" and the interior wall.

Was that someones work-around?
