See what a gust of Wind did to SOB.

Got the below link from the new RV Travel newsletter today. Thought I'd share it with all of you.

Yikes! That's awful! Looks like a pretty short wheelbase vehicle. Can you tell what kind it is?

I have been upside down in an SUV before (without a trailer, thanks to black ice on the road), I definitly wouldn't care to ever do that again!

The smoke from the TV exhaust and the blowing dust tells me that the wind gust was part of already windy conditions. The patrol car dash cam shows a speed of 66. Too fast to begin with. It happened in a right hand car drive country. The speed of the incident left no time at all for the driver to react. 65MPH is too fast for towing because your reaction time to whatever sudden danger presents itself is very limited if at all.

Short wheelbased SUV

This is why I cringe when people in short wheelbased SUVs think they can tow 23-27 foot trailers. While some of the tow ratings indicate it can be done, it just isn't wise just for the two reasons already mentioned in this thread, 18 wheelers and wind gusts.

If the white lines and space between them is the same as here, 15' and 20', 35' combined. It looks like the SUV only went down the road about 140 feet after the trailer started to slide on the pavement. I would have thought it would have traveled much further given 66 MPH as indicated on the screen shot. And not near the damage I would have expected to see at that speed. Will have to watch it again, maybe the HP was moving faster than the SUV and trailer.

Add on edit. Rewatching and it looks like LEO was gaining rapidly on the tow prior to the stuff hit the rotary mover. Still a very lucky driver to be able to get out and lucky to have a LEO so close.

Is that the complete story??

I believe I've seen that episode on one of the Cops type programs, perhaps "scariest crashes" or some such. My memory is fuzzy but it seems that there was more to that incident than just wind.

Seeing that film clip is a really sobering event. It makes you want to be very careful.

Don't worry General...I got your back!!!!!

This video is EXACTLY why I traded in my Trailblazer today for a full size 1/2 ton Silverado.

Don't get me wrong, my old Caravanner was about 2000 lbs and towed in 50 MPH crosswinds fine, but I know better and am on the path to righteousness!

Not to worry, we still love you. Uh, you are not a lawyer also? No problem with either one, just don't care for the combination.
