Second 'First Annual Padre Beach Bash'

Well, the clock is ticking: in just over two weeks I will be pulling out of scenic Lawton Oklahoma for a couple weeks boondocking on the beach at Padre Island National Seashore.

While I am in the area I will be checking out the local sites and maybe hitting some of the national wildlife refuges in the area. New to this years trip, I will be spending Christmas on the beach. I will be flying mom in for a couple days (shes never been on a beach) and a friend or two will be coming by for a day here and there, as well as another airstream couple from southern Illinois who I knew when I went to school there. Color me excited

Sounds great!

Do hope we'll be able to join you in some future year, and that you continue the 'annual' event until we're able to get there.

What's the route to & fro? U.S. 281 to San Antonio? Texas 16 past Enchanted Rock? Have you been to Larry McMurtry's multi-building gigantic bookstore in Archer City?

A route I would consider (longer, granted) for this trip or another time would be Archer City to Mineral Wells to Comanche; from San Saba to Fredericksburg; from Kerrville to Pleasanton to I-37. This bypasses all the major metro areas, has plenty of scenery and I have travelled them all in the past year with my 61' rig.

Google calls it 627 miles from Lawton to PINS. That's 14 hours at 45 mph average (including stops at every 2-hrs, roughly).

If you're looking for quality food for cooking, then MOODY'S Quality Meat at Alameda and Airline (huge parking lot) has the best quality and selection, plus quite a few items (side dishes; frozen) that may appeal. Not to mention, B&B Charcoal. (4703 S Alameda St, Corpus Christi, TX 78412; (361) 992-6512; about a 4-mile roundtrip off of the Airline Exit (turn left, toward CC Bay if heading out to Island) Otherwise, the HEB grocery on Waldron Road Exit is the best choice for all other (turn right)

I was about to PM you and ask when you were leaving for the beach. I recall reading there was a lot of damage on S. Padre Is. early in the hurricane season. I hope things are ok by now.

Have you completed any more work on your Tradewind?

Have a good time, Rodney.

I really haven't thought about the route much although you have some good ideas.

The trailer is in about the same sad shape you saw gene. I was hoping to get the grey tank repaired and the sat internet for the trip, but those both look unlikely at this juncture.

I will be sure and have a margarita for all the snow bound in Angle fire

Drink up, but some of us like snow. I never did like getting sand in my shoes, my clothes, my food. It's the old story, mountains or seashore?

Rodney send me a PM if you will be staying close to Corpus Christi , there's plenty to see and do around there for first timers

Thanks! I will be staying right on the beach at the national park. I see that you are a retired fishing guide, so what sort of rig would you suggest for a newbie to surf fishing? I also expect to hit the wildlife areas for some bird photography.

T minus four days and counting. Looks like it will be soggy when I get to the beach. Can anyone with local knowledge point me toward a local firewood dealer?

Woodstock Tree Surgeons - Woodstock Tree Surgeons
2550 Rodd Field Rd, Corpus Christi 78414 - (361) 992-4808

Easy to get to from the highway to the island. It's a right-hand turn off the highway, about one mile (past Wooldridge Rd), shop on the left.

I had them come out and do an estimate for me on some tree removal. Man and his wife have a big lot, so tell him what you have and ask about turnaround room on lot (also for directions to avoid u-turn, although they are on a big wide street -- you can u-we it if you want; an interesting road, actually, Rodd Field Road was purpose-built by the Navy to run from the Naval Air Station in WWII to the first of four other satellite fields used for Naval Air Training; all of them along Oso Creek). http://www.airfields-freeman.com/TX/...pusW.html#rodd

For Google Map use; Streetview; you'll see his lot behind a white Ford truck headed towards the highway; driveway divides shop on left from house on right. Looks like some of his old electrical utility cherry pickers there.

twas the night before winter break

and all through the Trade Wind not a creature was stirring because it was 15 degrees and falling outside.

Its supposed to hit 11 tonight, so I am pretty psyched about pulling out of here on the morrow. Thurs-Sat is looking like near 80 temps during the day and 60s at night. Color me on the beach .

Rednax, thanks for the heads up on the wood situation, Im hoping there isn't a burn ban right now- I'm wanting to burn some firewood on the beach while I admire the light from the tiki torches.
