American Carrier

[QUOTE=Smartstream;1572274]I'm not sure exactly how the tandem axle air suspension is set up but I had a similar problem on my 280 and it was a pretty simple fix. Mine is an American Carrier system and they had the bushings for about $65 and the cross pins and "dog bone" link if needed. It took an hour or two to change if I remember correctly. The air bags may take a "set" from being run like that for some time. Turning one bag 180 degrees will help balance them or you can replace them if they are aged and cracked.[/QUOTE
Did you locate a source for American Carrier parts..also any idea where to obtain rear airbag replacements ?
Thanks
chris

Had an interesting morning with the Austin Travis County Tax Office (these folks register and title RV's inthis County)
After convincing them that the vehicle was not a "travel trailer" they admitted limited knowledge on registering motorhomes (guess Dealers do the heavy lifting for customers?)
Finally they worked-out that the 350LE, although an Airstream, was indeed, not a travel trailer (the supervisor gave a detailed description of the difference which was certainly enjoyable!)
But no cigar! As none of the documentation listed a vehicle weight, they now insist that I obtain a "weight slip" before they will issue a Texas title!
I protested that I had the manufacturers spec, wasn't that sufficient.? But no. Anyone know a way around this conumdrum or am I going to have to cruise I35 loking for a truck weigh scale ?

Google CAT scales. Most truck stops (love's, Pilot, Flying J etc) have them. It cost $10 for the first weight and a few dollars for each subsequent weight with in a few days. So you can get a empty and loaded weight.

When posting about what to expect from the tax office while you were on the road , I was thinking that a Cat Scale weight ticket would have been easy to obtain at a truck stop along the way . Most scrap iron recyclers have truck scales as do the two big garbage dumps in Austin . Ya might call and see if they will let you get a weight ticket from them .

When the wife and I drove up to northern Illinois and bought our 2005 AS we stopped at a cat scale in north Texas and got a weight slip on the way home .

Dave and Danny..thanks for the CAT/Truck Stop/etc info. Next step is to get the rear-end redone and then worry about getting the RV "Texas Titled"

We recently tried to get a license plate for our Airstream( a 28 foot trailer, purchased with a Missouri tag). We were told by Travis County that we had to go get it inspected! Like a car! Nothing was said about weighing it though. Wonder if that will come next.

And by the way, when you find scales near Austin please post. We went all the way down to Seguin where there are a couple of truck stops along I-10 with scales when we wanted to weigh our Yukon. Surely there is something closer and we would like to know about it.

Remember you'll pay a penalty if they know you took longer than 30 days to get it titled.

If there is no sales date on the title , it will not be a problem .

Don't know if you need to have a trailer weighed (but it will need to be inspected in any event I think?). Confused folks at the Travis County (Austin) had a hard time understanding that, although an Airstream (by make), it was not a "travel trailer" (by model) which appears to be their definition of an Airstream. It was only after they classified my vehicle as a "motorhome" that the need for a "weigh slip" became a requirement. Maybe someone else on the Forum with travel trailer titling experience can comment on weights and inspection for Travis?
Located all three CAT weigh stations within 50 miles of Austin..go to
CAT Scale
I now have a 30 day reprieve from Travis County which can be extended "due to mechanical" issues so seem to be safe to avoid penalties!
C'est la guerre!

Hard to believe the closest weigh scale to Austin is south of San Marcos. Travis County did not tell us we had to weigh ours...just get an inspection. Guess they need to confirm it is what we say it is.

Since tax is paid by weight and your title apparently had no weigh info, you will have to provide it.
When I titled my 345 in Texas with Alabama title and plates, I only had to provide insurance coverage. The only confusion I had to deal with was the Airstream VIN was a 1987 and GMC Vin a 1986. My insurance company issued a certificate as a 1986 and DMV told me its a 1987, just as the Alabama title said. They made me sign a change of year certificate for it to be a 1986, but once I received the title it was title as a 1987

all of these have truck scales ,
and yes you have to weigh your out of state titled travel trailer if the old title does not show the weight of the trailer.

Yes Chris and you are quite welcome. I've been a bit busy but glad to see you are making progress.

If your coach came from Washington I'm surprised the weight wasn't on the paperwork. They do like their tax $$$ around here. As for scales in addition to what has been listed look for large construction suppliers with rock and sand, a lot of them have scales.

Good luck.

Dan..although the coach was registered and came form Washington State, it was still titled in Tennessee (don't know how this happened!) and no docs mentioned weight. although the sales tax is calculated against the purchase price, the actual road tax seems to be based on weight.

Hey Danny..turns out that 9405 Dessau road is only a few miles from so will call-in on Monday and see if they have a working scale...place looks a bit run-down so mmmmm! Thanks for the suggestions but may end-up driving to my local CAT location.
