I'm curious about your "not" recommending the Cassiar though. I came up on the Alaska, and went back on the Cassiar, and really preferred it. Just seemed more mountains, trees, wildlife, don't recall any bad sections. Is it under construction this summer?
Although I agree that the Cassiar Highway gives more of a sense of wilderness and settlements are further apart, it seems to always require repair each summer depending on the previous winter's frost heaves and spring flooding. There have been years when folks have been stranded for a few days because of washed-out roads. Then there's the issue of narrow lanes without shoulders. For adventurous souls, who do well with exercising patience, the Cassiar just might be a great choice. Maybe those who have driven it this spring could weigh in for updates.

Our travels include all 48 conteguous states. Plus a couple trips into Mexico and a few into eastern Canada. We are interested in the scenery and wildlife with little emphases on the man-made attactions. I enjoy taking pictures that we always enjoy later.

If anyone can give me any tips on traveling the East Access Route according to the Milepost with possibly short-cuts if appropriate, we would be thankful. We do not need much as far as ammenities when stopped for the night. We will have a generator on board the truck. OH, yes, the rig consist of a 2002 GMC Duramax diesel dullie pulling a 2012 31' Classic Limited.

Any additional advice on Alaska travel while there and the return trip would also be appreciated.

If you would prfer, an email to Unkbill123@aol.com with "Alaska Travel" in the subject line would be ok on this end.

Hi Uncle Bill Ö Are you already on the road north to Alaska? It's good that you have The Milepost, which you'll find to have the most useful information of any publication. Here are my favorite places to stop and explore: In Canada Ö Banff/Jasper Nat'l Park; Sheep Mountain; Muncho Lake; Liard Hot Springs. Once in Alaska, it will be a matter of deciding whether you want to stay on the road system or fly bush planes to access regions that will expand your understanding of wilderness. After all, Alaska is about one-fourth the size of the U.S.!!

We got back to Fairbanks April 30 and had considered taking the Cassiar but didn't for two reasons, the were almost no campgrounds open (they will be now) and at least twice locals in western Canada recommend against taking it in the spring.
As a FYI the last portion of the Alaska Highway north of Burwash landing was about as rough as I have seen it in around 20 trips on the highway.

Thank you for the info. I'll remember when I'm headed up that way again. I must have been a bit lucky, as I really didn't check it out all that much before I planned the route. I wasn't so lucky on the Campbell Highway. I was on my motorcycle, and it was a challenge fully loaded with camping gear etc.. I have the impression that it never gets fixed either, that it's always just a rough road.

With this long thread, can't remember if you changed out your ST tires for LT's. Tire problems are the number 1 problem that travelers have going to Alaska. Not fun.

We haven't gone very far, which was planned. We left Olympia, WA on last Wed 5/14, Stayed in Hope, BC for the night which is a beautiful little town, if you are ever in the area it is worth a stop for a few days, lots to see and do.

The following morning we drove up through the Frazier Canyon to about 3 miles south of 100 Mile House, turning right on Hwy 24 for about 25 miles to Sheridan Lake. We are staying at the Loon Bay Resort. We have stayed here before, a beautiful lake. The BC Unit has an annual fishing rally here every year, so it's been fun visiting with all the folks up here. We will be leaving here tomorrow, 5/21 and heading to Prince George. We will only stay there one night, as be have been there before.

Well apparently I have forgotten how to add pictures. I do have one picture as an attachment but I don't think that is right. Help someone.

Not only pictures but recommend stops. i.e. sightseeing, eateries, camping, etc.
