Schuylkill expressway, Blue route or other?

Headed to Jersey shore haven this morning from Lancaster Co.. Which is the best way to go, Trunpike to schuylkill expressway or Blue route 476 or another way? I was thinking of taking turnpike to 322 to 95 over the commodore Barry bridge instead? Opinions are wanted.

Hi Steve,

Sorry I can't provide any recommended travel routes as we go to the Maryland eastern shore when we go. But nevertheless drive safely and enjoy the trip. Looks like the weather will be nicer (not so hot) later in the week.

Best regards,

Bob

It's a Hobson's choice. The Schuylkill is a horror (especially towing) and there's construction on 322. The Commodore Barry will get you closer to your ultimate destination, probably with a little less white-knuckle driving. Google maps says it's about 1 hour 30 minutes from Media to JSH, but Google isn't towing. ;-)

Take it slow and safe; it'll get a little better once you get into NJ.

(BTW, we're having a wicked year for ticks, so take precautions when you get to JSH.)

Well I went 322 to commodore Barry bridge. We got here safely. Won't go that way again, nightmare crossing three lanes of I95 to get to bridge exit in a quarter of a miles distance.

Oh the SHUREKILL!
Drove it for many years as I lived in Berks county and worked in Phila! That's ALWAYS been a road to avoid and I expect it will never change unless they double decker it!

Now that you’re safely there how about a review of the campground and its charms?

From personal experience, under no means take the Surekill unless it is in the middle of the night. We prefer 476 across to NJ then hit NJ Turnpike or 295. Longer but often quicker, depending on traffic.

Yes, that's a very hairy merge to the right. However, if you can imagine anything worse than that, it would be called the Schuylkill Expressway.

Sorry we missed you. We were there for the rally and left Sunday morning. We were parked in the rally field right next to that beautiful '55 GMC truck. Boy did he do a nice job on that one. If you took a walk farther back in the park they have a couple of Airstream 5th wheel trailers. Don't see them very often and I bet it won't be long before we just won't see them at all. Glad you had a good experience there.

My personal experiences with I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) have all involved heavy, dense traffic and/or horrible backups and delays. I would not recommend it for any type of travel when a viable alternative exists. Sadly, last time I was in that neck of the woods my trip was from Cincinnati to Center City Philadelphia and return, so viable alternatives were on the short side.
