Scenic CA. rustic campgrounds for larger Airstream

Hi, I'd like to try some new campgrounds this summer. I'm primarily looking for govt campgrounds in scenic areas. Large enough to accommodate widebody 25. Hookups not necessary. Scenic private campgrounds are great also. Thanks for any and all suggestions!

We loved Kings Canyon but unfortunately, didn't camp there. However, we road through one campground at KC and wished we'd stayed there. I just don't recall if it was Azalea or Potwisha ?@#$%^ Had huge, lovely trees and very few people. We also liked Wawona campground at Yosemite. Again, large trees, few people and even a river!

Check out Kirk Creek on the coast. We haven't stayed there yet, but we are planning to this year. It was featured in Sunset magazine in 2010 (with an Airstream, nonetheless). No hook ups, but it is right on a sea cliff.
I've researched and read a lot of reviews about this campground. From what I understand, the are sites available for reservation thru reserveamerica.com, and there are walk up site which, I hear, go ultra fast.
Go to Google images of this campground, looks pretty cool.

Check out the CA state campground website. Many state campgrounds have closed due to budget issues.
I have been to many that are quite nice.

I agree with Mrs. Mod about Kirk Creek.
I just camped there last week with a friend and we loved it! (Do check what the max length allowed is ahead of time to be sure).
We reserved online and each had great views. Parked next to me were two other Airstreams! Happy Travels...

Kristiana,
That looks like a great spot. I'd like to know the site number for future reference.
I realize my trailer might be a little large to fit in there, but if I got the sun bathing pooch to move, and rearanged the bolders with my back bumper, who knows!

Oh you can't move the pooch, look how happy she is!

I was in site #16 which was very steep. I read that in the Yelp reviews, but I felt lucky to get a space at all. It was a wonderful site, but there are actually better ones.

I'd recommend site #'s 9, 11, 13 or 22 if you can get them.
You'll need to reserve on :www.recreation.gov

(The fine print: heads up on the poison oak & raccoons, and be prepared to cut the cell phone cord, there's no service. It was great!).

Have fun & post pics if you do end up camping there please.

Kirk Creek. I happened to be reading that Sunset magazine when I looked up and realized that I was looking at the same view as the cover.

We stayed in #14. Please note that we are 30 feet of glorious aluminum, and yes it was a little tight. Next time I will try and book # 22, 21, 19, or 17. It was great. If you hike down to the beach area you can dig for Jade. But yeah be prepared for no phone, internet, or cable. And you have to seriously watch out for poison oak. And yeah the raccoons are bigger than a german shepard and aren't afraid of anything. I'd go back in a heartbeat!

Some other locations you might check into. Morro Bay State park. Pismo Beach North Beach state park. Quail Vallley. Sequoia Ranch RV park.

Just depends on where in California you're wanting to go. If you want a state camp ground check with reserveamerica.com, you can enter the length of your trailer in your search criteria and it will match you the area your looking for. We have a 30 foot, and haven't had any problems booking anywhere Good luck let us know where you end up. We love pictures!

Go here.... ALL US AND CANADA CAMPGROUNDS: STATE PARKS NATIONAL PARKS FORESTS MORE california oregon washington new york pennsylvania more

Move the map around to the area you are interested in...zoom in to see all the available campgrounds, click on them for data...

In the upper RH corner of the map area, you can also change to the satellite view and zoom in to see the area, etc...

This is a GREAT site when visiting unfamiliar areas of the US...!

They also have a smart phone APP that will give you the same data on your wee screen!

Have a great trip, California has many, many places (Fed, State, County, etc.) to RV and camp!

If you really want to go off 'the beaten path' there's Eagles Nest Rv campground in Modoc County. That's is right next to Lava Beds NP. Eagles nest is private and has some hookups I believe. We stayed there 3 years ago and had hookups. Near Lava Beds is a place you can collect obsidian from a very large ancient lava flow. Modoc Co. is very remote and very different.
On the way up you can spend some days in or near Lassen Volcanic NP.
