Save this vintage AS
Saw this vintage pipe frame trailer last weekend in California, between the Harvard exit and the waterpark on the NW side of I-15. Really decent shell, but it appears the frame is broken on the street side (see height of wheel in the well on street side). I couldn't get around to the back end, but from what I could see there were no major dents anywhere.
Anyone out there interested in taking on the job of building a new frame?

I hope there is someone on the west coast that will do it, what a cool old unit.

This trailer must be saved. Did you speak to the owner Led? So where is the Harvard exit anyway? If the price is right, I could make a few calls for one in this kind of shape.

Brad,
Harvard is just East of Barstow. Looks like it might be around a 50 Liner. Where are you going to put it? If you go for it, let me know, I could help you pick it up. Looks like it might be a flat bed job.

If it has a broken axle that flat bed would be the only way to go. I wasn't necessarily thinking of getting it myself, although I would love to have one of this vintage, the wife wouldn't like me having it so much. :-) Rather than see it rot away, I would certainly like to see this one saved or in the least kept from getting any worse.

Directions: take the Harvard exit off of I-15 (approx 22 miles east of Barstow), go to the "north" side, pass the first left (interstate on ramp) and take the next left (this road parallels the interstate). Proceed "west" toward the water park, about half way there you will see a county-type dirt road to the right. If you reach the peacan grove you've gone too far. Take the right turn and go about 300 yards. The trailer is behind a small corral on the right. There is a residence just another 100 yards along the road, but I did not inquire.
I'll be going past this spot on 30 April and will check it out further with the nearest residence. Let me know if any of you happen to get there first--save me a stop. I'll be there in the daylight so if you want more photos in order to make a decision, I'd be happy to oblige.
Yes, it is a flatbed job. In the dark I tried to ascertain whether the tire was up in the wheel well or down in a hole--pretty sure it was the former.

I would get it and fix it if I had access to a low cost flatbed. It would be very expensive to flat bed it to my shop from east of Barstow at regular rates.
Is there any information on who owns it?

Uwe,
Try Uhaul or someone like that and rent a car trailer. Then you will need a come a long or winch to load it on the trailer. First need to find out how broken the running gear is, in order to load it up. It might be a pipe frame which of course makes everything more difficult. Some one needs to make a run to Barstow and find out more info.
Uwe, you need another project the Overlander is almost complete.

...like I need a hole in my head....
Seriously, though, it needs to be rescued, and my welder still has gas and wire in it from the last job...
Think it would fit on a U-Haul car trailer?
Anyone out there with an oldie like that?
Bill, wanna go?

Uwe,
First you need to determine length, remember the old ones are only seven feet wide. If the width works between the trailer wheel wells, a car trailer would work. Sure, Rick and I will go, just need to work on the right weekend. My weekends are filling up fast.

Those U-Haul car trailers aren't all that wide. I'm thinking only 78-80" clear between the fender wells. If I was closer and not so busy, I'd drag my car trailer down there and help you put a plan in action. You guys made me even run outside with a flashlight to measure my own car trailer width!
Go save it Uwe, before it becomes another gang bang target holder. Jeff

Jeff,
Your trailer could work, I will measure my Liner tomorrow and see. It has a width of 85" so subtracting a few for the distance from the outside of the wheels and the body could easily bring it to less than 80".
Come on down and lets make it an adventure.
It is hard to ID the trailer, but looking at RJ's site, this one looks similar to the 1948 25' Liner.

I'll get all the info on 30 April, guys (and others?), unless you get up there first. Unfortunately, I'll have my Caravel in tow, going to Lancaster. If any of you are serious, I'll see if I can't borrow a trailer in Mojave and, depending on the owner being willing to sell, get it to some protected parking until you can pick it up.
You guys are too funny. I see a herd showing up as a posse and scaring the heck out of the owner. Not to mention raising the price from zero.

Allright folks, I measured the width of my Liner at the wheels and it is 85". Maybe the pipe frame trailers are narrower. Question for Fred.

It got away
Sorry to report that I went to get the details on this trailer and it was GONE. Talked to the neighbor and he said it belonged to a friend, was in perfect shape, and his friend had taken it "up on the mountain near Yermo." The axle was OK, it was just parked in a dip.
So I'll keep looking....

Good news
Roger,
At least it is being used and hopefully enjoyed, what more can one ask?
