Savannah and/or Charleston

Next spring, late March or early April, we will be heading home to PA from FL. We would like to make it a relaxing trip with stops along the way. We have never visited Savannah or Charleston, SC and was thinking these places would be worth visiting for a few days.

Any recommendations for places to park our AS for a few days and go from there? I'm guessing commercial campgrounds would be best because of providing full hookups but am open to any recommendations.

As always, thanks!

Rivers end park on Tybee Island better known as Savannah Beach. Owned by the city of Tybee. Full hookups with great showers and restrooms if needed.

And, James Island County Park near Charleston.

Check out Oak Plantation Campground just a few miles south of Charleston. Very popular here in the area. If you prefer north of Charleston, try the KOA in Mt Pleasant.

We stayed at the Campground at James Island. A County park I believe but it was very nice!

Savannah State Park. Stayed there earlier this summer. I'd give it an A+ rating. 20 minute drive to downtown Savannah. Plenty of amenities near park.

Ditto. Nice campground with plenty of family friendly things to do on the island. Cleanest bath houses of any campground we've ever stayed in.

Skidaway Island State Park near Savannah. Full hook ups in in spacious sites under a canopy of Spanish moss covered trees.

We enjoyed Skidaway Island State Park near Savannah. Well spaced sites in a hammock surrounded by wetlands. You can reserve a site type, but not a specific site.

We have stayed at Skidaway Island State Park - highly recommended. I recommend reserving early as we had to cut our visit to Charleston short as everything was booked up.

KOA Mt Pleasant near Charleston was fine for us over Labor Day weekend. Visited James Island to check it out. Very nice there. County park with liberal reservation policy. Private sites. Lots of things to see . Downtown, the Market, the Battery and more. Lilly and Me gave great tips on what to do. BTW on the way back from the coast we spent a day at Mt Airy NC (Mayberry). Nice ...relaxing. Then to the Blue Ridge Parkway. (Where we are now) WOW! I could take weeks from Florida North. Enjoy!

Love both Charleston and Savannah and have visited both a number of times - usually when heading home from Florida.

In Charleston we have stayed three or four times at James Island County Park and I would add my recommendation to those that others have made.

Pretty much like a state park but with full hookups (as I recall) and no more than about 15 minutes drive from the centre of the city. You would never know it when you are in the park!

Last March when we stopped for a week at Savannah, we stayed at Red Gate Farms, a commercial RV park that is very close to downtown yet on a working horse farm with tons of space and full hookups - would stay there again.

It was a little pricey considering it is fairly basic, but the convenience made it worthwhile to us.

Sites are very large, but are pretty much in an open field - we paid a little extra for one of a few so-called premium sites they offer. I wouldn't really call them premium other than that they were much more secluded with large trees around.

For Savannah I highly recommend Skidaway Island State Park. Full hookups, big sites, a quiet setting and 15 to 20 minutes to downtown. If you like congestion and small sites typical of a commercial campground (some people do) the Tybeee Island CG's will be more to your liking.

We just stayed at Hilton Head Harbor on our way through last week. It is close to Savannah and an absolutely beautiful campground.
