Savannah
I've managed to add an extra day to our upcoming Disney trip so we're planning to spend 2 nights in Savannah on the way to Florida.
We've never stayed in Savannah, or anywhere in Georgia, so what are the can't miss things to see and do?
Thanks!

Savannah is a lovely city to just walk around in the downtown historic district, second only to Charleston. Lots of beautiful town squares, architecture, stores, restaurants, pubs, nice riverfront. I do not know how Tybee Island fared in Hurricane Matthew, but it is a nice beach island location, if you like beaches. Really just a charming place to visit.

Check out Skidaway Island State Park. It's about 25 minutes from downtown.
I think that Tybee suffered a lot from the recent hurricane.

Tybee had 96 mph winds and storm surge. I'd check ahead.

You should check out Crooked River State Park in St. Mary's Georgia. It's near the GA/FL border and very pretty. Skidaway Island State Park is also very nice and is in a pretty area.

Check ahead on Skidaway also. The website suggests it will open sometime in November.

Savannah and Charleston are our two favourite US cities - this winter we will be stopping a couple of weeks in Charleston on our return trip from Florida.
The last time we stopped in Savannah, we stayed at Red Gate Campground which is on a horse farm just to the south west of the city centre. Nice and peaceful and quick/easy access to to city.
I would recommend on one of your days taking the hop on / hop off trolley tour. It gives you a place to park your car all day, and you get a very good overview of the entire downtown area. The tour guides give lots of insight together with some humour!
Have a great time!
Brian.

We have stayed at the KOA just outside of Savanna and drove into the city to enjoy the history and various restaurants.

If you like to tour historic homes or see some magnificent architecture, furniture, and gardens then check out the long list of houses open to the public:
http://www.visit-historic-savannah.c...ric-homes.html
Personally, the Regency style home (Owens-Thomas) is the best of the lot but another that might be of interest is the Greek/Italian style Andrew Low house which was the lifetime home to Juliette "Daisy" Low (founder of the Girl Scouts):

www.andrewlowhouse.com
Definitely see the old/central town (use the tram, do a Segway tour, take a carriage tour or walking tour; ~90 min. each) but also walk waterside along River Street along the converted cotton warehouses to see a variety of shops, galleries, street vendors, and entertaining personalities. Fort Pulaski was damaged in the storm and is closed until further notice.
FYI - Savannah is a pet friendly city and leashed pets are welcomed at parks/squares and most eateries with outside seating as well on many carriage & most walking tours, just check with the tour agents.

Thanks for the suggestions.
The trolley tour sounds great.
We're travelling with a 3 year old and a baby.
Has anyone done the trolley tour with small children and a stroller?

One more question, we're coming from Canada so I expect to tow through some salt and brine on the way down.
Anyone know of a good spot to wash the truck and trailer near savannah or on our way?
We plan to spend a night in Charlotte then move on to Savannah for two nights, then on to Disney.

Find a BlueBeacon truck wash on your way down. I have used them in Virginia and North Carolina and they have done a great job washing our various RV's.

We had a very good stay at Skidaway and it's close to downtown Savannah and, depending on the time, may include some good programs/exhibits for the 3 year old. There are good trails to walk as well. Check for reopening time from the hurricane The downtown visitor's center has a good map for walking the city and will include parks that the children may enjoy. We've also been to Cumberland Island that's a boat ride from St. Mary's and close to Crooked River as mentioned. Go to the southwest side beyond the houses and search for shark's teeth where they dumped the fill from dredging.

We stopped on our way back from Fort Wilderness two years ago. Stayed at Red Gate and took a cab into the city. Had a great time at the Tavern in The Old Pink House. Have Fun!!!
