San Diego to McAllen, TX

Heading to McAllen TX next week and was wondering if anybody has recommendations for stops in Las Cruces, New Mexico, Boerne Texas or McAllen Texas or surrounding areas.

Not a sight seeing tour but still would like nice places to stay with at a minimum 30 A electricity.

Hi Ron,

On our way to Tucson from our home near Toronto last winter, we stopped overnight at Hacienda RV Park in Las Cruces.

A very nice spot indeed, and I wish we had tme for more than just an overnight stop so we could have explored Las Cruces and the historic area in which the RV park is located.

It is spotlessly clean. They rake all the sand on each site after someone leaves and discourage people from cutting across empty sites so as not to disturb the pristine appearance - Like a Japanese garden with the rake pattern! That will give you some idea!

We would certainly use it again as an overnight stop if needed i that vicinity.

Brian.

We have a rally every year at Alamo Fiesta RV Resort in Boerne, and it's fairly nice. If I needed a place to spend the night in the area, I would definitely stay there.

Top Of The Hill is even more "so so", IMHO. If you want a nicer place there are several in Kerrville about 30 minutes farther Northwest. Try Buckhorn Lake Resort which is right close to the interstate, or Guadalupe River RV Resort which is about 10 minutes off the interstate.

Agree with Steve's comments about Buckhorn Lake Resort - we made a one night stop there on our trip to Tucson last winter.

Top Of The Hill used to be OK, but they had a big fire there a few years ago and it burnt all the trees.

Of the two I mentioned about, I like Guadalupe River better, but it's not as handy when you are just traveling thru.

And in McAllen, we've not found anything in McAllen proper, but we have stayed at Tropical Trails in Mission, I believe it is, a neighboring town to McAllen, and it's OK.

Why not take a look at the HWY 90 to Del Rio and then south to Laredo, Roma then to the Valley. Lots of history and you will see REAL West Texas all the way. Ft. Stockton, Langtry, Comstock, Del Rio, Lake Amistad, Quemado and Laredo all have some unique places. Below Laredo to the Mission area...just keep moving.

Just checked in to Hacienda RV Park. It is super nice and would definitely stay here again if passing through.

Stayed @ Buckhorn last night. Extremely nice park with full hookups, level concrete pads, picnic tables and grass. Beautful RV Resort with lakes for fishing and lots of space.

Did make a trip through Kerrville and it is a cool place along the Guadalupe River which was actually pretty full.

Now in McAllen at my Mom's and then on to the 2nd Leg of our cross country and back trip.
