Safety of campsite

We will be at Big Meadows in a few weeks. Does everyone think it would be safe to leave our Honda generator out when we leave our campsite? Or is it likely to be stolen?

I don't think it will be safe to ever leave it out without some securing it.

You hear about them walking away in the boondocks and organized campgrounds.

I have a new Yamaha 2000/propane and no way would I leave the camp site without securing the generator or putting it in the trailer, another benefit of propane.

with something that expensive, I'd lock it down. A buddy had a cheaper one that walked away from his campsite a few years ago. I have a metal add-on in the handle of my Honda that makes cutting it off with a hacksaw a little more time consuming, but not impossible.

Little things I don't sweat.

Lock or hide. Ditto on benefits of propane conversion.

Why take a chance? If it were me I'd be worried about it all the time I was away anyway!

At the very least, put it well out of sight and secured with a good cable lock or similar.

You can buy a steel bracket attachment that clamps around the plastic handle on the Honda gennie and makes it much more difficult for someone to simply saw through the plastic handle because now, they would also need to saw through the steel protector - which I suspect (hope!) is hardened for greater resistance.

It is secured to teh plastic handle with those special anti-vandalism screws. Of course if someone wants it bad enough they'll get it anyway!

We mostly use our Honda gennie at Flying J truck stops when overnighting on long cross country winter getaway trips.

I put it out and secure it to the front frame of the trailer - but I won't leave it out overnight even thus locked. I put it inside the truck (still cable-locked) when we retire for the night and then just run on coach batteries overnight to run lights, furnace, etc.

I generally put the gennie out and run it again in the am for an hour or so while we have breakfast to give the coach batteries a good charge before we depart. I don't think the coach batteries charge nearly as fast from the truck connection as they do from the converter/charger in the AS.

It's a guaranteed theft. Why take a chance? Better be safe than sorry!

Nothing is theft-proof, but you can make things difficult for the would-be thief.

We served as camp hosts on a military base campground for a few months, you won't find better security. The only thing stolen was a Honda generator, left out at night. Everybody wants one, easy to steal and sell for sizable cash.

We have two Honda 2000's that we have been using regularly for ten years. While we are using them, most often at a Wal-Mart parking lot or truck plaza, we lock cable lock them to the tow tow vehicle. We have never had an issue.

We would never leave the generators out while we are away from the campsite.

Brian, how do you store your gen and gas on the road?

I never wanted gas inside the van so ordered a Yamaha 1000 tri-fuel.

Or are yours also propane maybe?

Thanks,

Peter

Hi Peter. We have two tow vehicles. One is a 2005 Suburban 2500 and the other is a 2011 Silverado 3500 with a pop-up truck camper. We have different generator routines with each of the tow vehicles. Our Generators are Honda 2000's. They are gasoline powered.

With the Suburban, we store the generators in the back of the Suburban. With the Silverado, one of the generators is carried in a generator compartment on the outside of the truck camper. We carry the other on the floor in the back seat of the truck. We have never found the smell from the generators offensive. WE have been doing this for a long time and many miles of travel.

I know that some would find this system untenable, but it has always worked for us.

Brian

Something to think about if you lock it up.
Battery powered grinders with a cut off wheel make even the toughest locks, chains and cable as vulnerable as tying it up with a shoelace.

Any thing you can do to slow down a thief will help. Yes they can cut almost any lock or cable, you can slow them down and maybe discourage them by using more than one. Put the gen under something or with something on top. Just remember most thiefs are grab and run so any thing to slow them down helps.

It is virtually impossible to stop a determined thief. But that doesn't mean you don't try to slow down the opportunistic ones.

And if someone tries to steal my stuff with a power grinder, that will alert me and I will be making some noise of my own.

Leaving the generator out fastened by whatever one can find is not too smart. The thief arrives with a cut off wheel and powers up the generator to run the electric cutting tool......
