The big treat at the end of Hwy 12 is Capitol Reef.

Re-opening this discussion as I am planning the same trip right now in early June 2016...

First, thanks for the recommendation for highway 12 to Bryce from Zion. I watched some YouTube videos and even though it freaks me out, we're going to take that route. It's probably the only time in my life I will be out there, so we're going to do it.

Specifically regarding the tunnel at Zion...I have a 30' AS which is really 30'11" ball to bumper. My current tow vehicle is a '14 F150 crew / short bed (19'4" bumper to bumper). Based on a previous post in this thread, someone was a few inches over 50' and the ranger let them through, so I suppose I'm OK at 50'9" (with +6" for the hitch). There is a chance that I'll have a tow vehicle on this trip that is 20'4" which would then put me at 51'9".

Has anyone even be denied access to the tunnel for being too long? If yes, is there room to turn around and go back the other way?

Anyone reading here ever traversed the tunnel with a 30' or longer AS trailer? Did the ranger measure you as long and still allow you through?

I was in Zion in June 2015. I didn't tow through the tunnel to get to Bryce but decided to drive north to Cedar City then take Hwy 20 east then south on 89 to Panguitch and on to Bryce. Just make sure your brake controller is set up correctly.

Here is a short dash mounted GoPro video of that route.

Hi Kelvin

I read your thread on this trip as well. Your route is my backup plan. I'd like to take the scenic route including the tunnel if possible. I just don't want to be "that guy" that gets to the tunnel and can't get through and no where to turn around either.

So was hoping for some experience with a large AS going through the tunnel. If no one chimes in by May, then it's your route that I will take.

I don't think you will have any problems with the tunnel. They run you right down the middle and you have the whole width and no tight corners. I have seen large 40' class A's with toads go through. Rangers were not out with tape measures. Besides, there is no way to turn around so they will let you through.

The tight part will be on the switch backs as some are tight 180's and more. But just go slow, take'em wide and maybe crowd the yellow line if no oncoming traffic. The scenery is worth the trip. Reward yourself with some Ho-Made pie in Mt. Carmel Junction.

The tunnel in Zion is all about width, not length. They will close the tunnel to traffic in the opposite direction and you will drive right down the middle. It will cost you $15, but well worth it. You can actually pay when you enter the park and the ranger will give you a "tunnel" pass. That's also a good time to ask any last minute questions before you get up the road to the tunnel entrance.

Have a great trip. It's beautiful country.

Actually, not so. There is a length restriction as well. From the site: http://www.nps.gov/zion/planyourvisi...mel-tunnel.htm
"Prohibited Vehicles...single vehicles over 40 feet long, combined vehicles over 50 feet long."
Thus, my concern.

Sorry WineStream, I have seen a 40' Class A with a Toad going through the tunnel, but I don't have any personal experience with that length.

Actually, the Zion tunnel is a great experience. If you're camping in the park or in one of the gateway communities, just unhitch your TV and explore the tunnel and the east side of the park that way. Maybe the switchbacks aren't super for anyone afraid of heights, but driving on the slickrock is incredibly beautiful.

I started this thread and I would have loved the tunnel but pulling a 28' new to full-timing we decided we had no time restraints and the road scared me not the tunnel. So we came out of GC and went S then W to Lake Mead for boondocking. This was an unforgettable great experience. Then on to Zion. We all have to do what we feel comfortable with...so weigh the stories and pick what works for you.
