Made that trip many many times.
Hwy 5 is the most direct way and it nothing like going south on 5 from Sacramento - as far as "sights"
It's pretty flat/straight unil sometime after Redding, then it's climbing and winding fairly moderate (about like Hwy 80 from Sac to Tahoe - if you've done that). Then there is a significant pass over the Siskyou's (spelling?) and a long fairly straight drop into Ashland, Or. And then it's back to mildly hilly mildly curvy until for a couple of hours (maybe Roseburg) then it's back to flat and straight to Salem. Very beautiful drive (for a freeway).
Good Luck, I'm sure others will pipe in with their opinions/memories.
Mark

Cynthia,

Going up for the International? It is all interstate, but as mentioned some pretty steep grades in southern Oregon. We plan on attending the International, but I think that we will go up 395 and cross over in central Oregon to Salem. Will take the interstate back however. Good luck.

We live along this route just south of Mount Shasta. PM me if you want to overnight here. We have plenty of flat ground and a 50 amp hook-up which you are welcome to use for an overnight stop.

Cynthia,

I-5 in northern CA and southern OR has plenty of hills, but nothing your rig can't handle. Much better road than 101 south of Eureka. My only recommendation is to lock your transmission out of OD as soon as you start climbing north of Redding and leave it locked out until the road flattens out in OR.

The descent from the summit just over the Oregon border down to Ashland, Or. is a bit scary, BUT, is is good two lane freeway. Just keep your speed under control and take your time, you'll do fine.

Yep ... that grade on I-5 over the Siskiyous is a long slow climb up to Oregon ... and a steep fast descent into Ashland. We've done it twice now ... without problems.

Take it slow coming down ... don't worry about the idiot behind you ... that's what the other lane is for.

I've made that trip many times, most recently over Labor Day. I think MarkR described it perfectly... the stretch from Redding to Roseburg is pretty spectacular. Siskyou Summit is a long grade on the California side and a shorter, steeper grade on the Oregon side, but nothing too radical, and it's 4 lane highway the whole way. Plenty of reasons to head up that way, and no reasons I can think of to avoid it. Have fun!
