RV "house" question
We have some vacant land and are considering building a structure that is a combo apartment/RV garage. I've seen pictures of these on sites such as www.coolhouseplans.com and www.thegarageplanshop.com. I'd love to hear from people who have actually done this.
We're not interested in the larger brick structures where the emphasis is on the house with an RV garage attached, but rather the emphasis being the RV storage (for both our trailer and Interstate) with a small living space attached.
We won't have a zoning, ordinance issue; it's just choosing the right plan.

Big insulated steel building... Pull the AS inside out of the weather and have all the room you need for maintaining it. Put a bathroom and small kitchen facilities in one corner. They are relatively inexpensive to build and can be considered a barn for tax purposes, secured while you are gone.

Are you planning electricity, a water well and septic system too?
Would you use the facility to lay over the winter months?
I've thought about this too but then think how well would the resale value be when it's time to move into town due to age/health issues.

I hope to do the very same thing, Kelly and Matt. A basic insulated metal building on a slab, with all the utilities, including septic, and room for a bathroom, shop (at least against one wall), and maybe some storage. A dog run outside with a door to an inside kennel area?
If the overhead door is tall enough for the AS to drive in, the building will be high enough so that you can have a loft area above the other uses you build in to one corner/wall. A second older used trailer could double as the apartment IMO, saving on costs, at least for now. Maybe a trailer or motor home that has to be towed to the site (not road-worthy just now)?
Good luck!

We're on the lookout for an old firehouse. Best of both worlds.

We were looking at a similar concept as a second home. Then I came across Costco Garages/barns. http://www.costco.com/Barn-Pros-post...100140420.html (Barn Pros). Really cool packages. The one thought is a door on both ends to pull through. Keeping this on file for sure.

We have a weekend place on the Texas coast and "barnaminiums" are the latest rage. Ours is 2500 s.f. And one side is living space (2br, 2 baths) and the other side is for boats, etc. Some of our neighbors have a boat and a travel trailer inside. One comes on the market rarely bu when the do they don't last long.

Likin' the term "Barnaminium" -- an Internet search flushes up a bevy of barn/home ideas.
A similar local home's driveway sign reads:
"Barn Again"
PS -- Barndominium is an alternate term.

Kfrere - We plan to build the same unit and pretty much exactly as you described. I'm meeting with a builder soon to get plans drawn up and budget determined. I've also looked at the pre-packaged plans available online and gotten some good inspiration. I'll post here as we learn more...

Wondering if you have made any decisions or started this project? With the weather improving and summer on the way, interest in this concept may grow . . .
Howdy TCwheels, looking forward to your thoughts when you refine your plans, as our FC20's would be easy to tuck away in a small barndominium someplace! [or more than one place?] Are you aiming to build near home or a more temperate location like Georgia where you parked the trailer?
Thanks,
Peter

Peter -
Yes, the plan is to have space for the 20 and perhaps a small boat in the RV section, plus a two car garage - with a cool apartment in the mix, built on flat piece of property. We're on a crazy hill in our current home with no place for the AS and lots of stairs. So a right-size, single floor barndominium built on the right piece of land would be perfect for our next/last place.
We absolutely love the TC area 😎 so we're always going to base here, therefore we're looking at property close to home. Not easy to find on this peninsula we live on, but we're searching and hoping!
