Roan Mountain State Park
Rick
We have camped at Roan Mt. State Park several times in our 25' Classic as recent as this June. The drive on Hwy 19E from Elizabethton to Roan Mountain does have couple steep climbs but you Duramax 2500 will have no problems on the pull. Since you'll be at 3000' elevation below Roan Mountain (6000' elevation) in the state park you can expect cool nights in August and much cooler in early fall months. I suggest you get reservations on the internet before arriving to get the best spots. We prefer to camp in the bottom camping area that's near the ranger camper check in station which is mostly flat compared to remaining camping loops across river that are on steep mountain side that may be a challenge to park longer trailers. The state park has summer music programs at the amphitheater on weekends and also a swimming pool and tennis courts for recreation.
If you like brick oven wood fired pizza you might check out the SMOKY MOUNTAIN BAKERS open Tuesday-Saturday just off Hwy 19E as you are leaving Roan Mountain east toward Elkpark N.C.. Look for their sign on left side of highway and turn right onto side street that will direct you to their business located in a converted barn behind farmhouse. We ate there several times last June when camping there after other campers told us about it. Their pizza prices are very reasonable and much better quality than many of the franchise ones we eat at home.
Also if you like really good barbecue you might go to "THE ORGINAL RIDGEWOOD BARBECUE" located off Hwy 19E north of Elizabethton near Bluff City limits. They have been featured in Southern Living Magazine and are a big favorite of Bristol Speedway fans and drivers. Check out on the internet. Parking spaces are limited and always full at noon.
The Blue Ridge Parkway, Linville Falls, Blowing Rock and Historic Jonesborough are all within hour's drive from the state park to see! Hope this information helps.
