Roadside Attractions

As we plan Lucy's Adventures for 2015, we are seeking help in locating interesting Roadside Attractions to see along the way as we travel the highways and byways.

In Lucy's past travels, we have been known to go off the beaten path to see such attractions as the Corn Palace in South Dakota, Lucy the Elephant in New Jersey, the largest ball of twine in Kansas, and the Four Corners where Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico meet.

We have a book of off beat attractions, but would like to hear about your personal favorites.

Brian

Great thread idea Brian

Aztec Colorado has a museum like attraction. It is a fantastic, very well preserved Kiva as well as living quarters from the Anastazi peoples.

Columbia County Pennsylvania has quite a few covered bridges. Many are in great shape and you could photo your trailer on them.

New Orleans has a few very old above ground graveyards. One is across from Commanders Palace, a fine restaurant in a beautiful old neighborhood

BTW recent GPS calculations show that the Four Corners monument is a mile off from where it should be

And then there's……….

A not so well preserved mandolin player, located near The Great Swamp in New Jersey. He is an odd, nutty guy who will sing you a song, if you ask nicely.
I know…..kinda strange?

Yes, I look regularly at roadsideamerica.com. I also have two books, "United States on the Road" and "Roadside Attractions".

I am hoping to get some personal recommendations from members for attractions that they have visited.

Have you been to Pioneer Village in Minden, Nebraska? It's a pretty cool museum.

One of the weirdest roadside attractions we've been, by far, is Leila's Hair museum in Independence, Missouri. The museum features Victorian hair art.

We enjoyed
the Rural Telephone Museum in Leslie, GA.

Dinosaur Land in White Post, Virginia also qualifies as a classic roadside attraction.

Casey, IL has both the "World's Largest Wind Chime," and the "World's Largest Golf Tee." Neighboring Martinsville, IL has the "World's largest Horseshoe."

We liked this NPR CD about Roadside attractions: NPR Road Trips: Roadside Attractions - NPR Road Trips - Spoken Word - Listen : NPR Shop

Have you seen Paul Bunyan and Babe in Bemidji Minnesota? They have a bunch of stuff up there to see. The local food is pretty good, too.

As a matter of fact, we were there this past July (2014). We enjoyed our visit seeing the sights, including Paul and Babe.

The Rhyolite Ghost Town AND Goldman Open Air Museum...Two attractions right next to each other! In the middle of nowhere near Death Valley NP. You can Google each of them for more info...

The cemetery in Terlingua Texas, a little bit off the beaten path but especially nice if you can plan to be there on the day of the dead.

I would vouch for the Minnesota State Fair as being Top Drawer!

Walleye pond
Lumberjacks
Horses
800 Pound Sow
Tooled leather belt (name on back optional)
All the milk you can drink for 75 cents, and a huge container of hot chocolate chip cookies for $6.

All in downtown St. Paul. Labor Day time
