Thanks, Moses. We're already planning our next trips. Just a few things to do to secure the homestead, and some repairs to the Bambi, and we''ll be wandering south. In the meantime, I still have lots of pictures:
Here are some shots of our transportation from the Bayou Segnette State Park campground into the city. We tried both driving into the city and trying to find a parking space (30 min.), and driving (20 min.)to Algiers Point and taking the ferry (pedestrians and bicyclists ride
free, but parking is $5.00 weekdays, and $10 on Friday/Saturday. We got lucky on the parking space one day. Otherwise, it's very expensive to park downtown. The day we drove in, we took the ferry back ($1.00 per vehicle). The whole time we rode the ferry, I never saw more than 5 or 6 vehicles on it. If anyone would consider pulling a trailer onto the ferry, I don't think it would survive the steep ramps.
Note to those who would drive into town - the Huey Long bridge is
very narrow, to the point that we saw a large dump truck behind us drive down the center of the lanes to avoid scraping the walls. In fact, the walls were well decorated with tire marks and automotive paint. I don't know if this is common practice but, as I have little depth perception, I appreciate the truck running interference for me. I read about it in advance on some RV travel forums,and this was a constant theme.
After you're there I'd suggest the best way to see the whole city is to take the streetcars. It's only $6 per day for a pass, and entitles you to ride all buses on the transit system until the wee hours of the morning. Next time, I believe we''ll take the ferry and bring our bikes with us.
