Road Trip

Has anyone driven US Highway 20 coast to coast? It runs from Newport Oregon to Boston, the longest US highway.

I have only done parts of highway 20, but most of highway 12 which seems to peter out about at the great lakes. And that was about 20 years ago.

Oops, just looked at an atlas and find I have driven all of highway 20 west of the Great Lakes, but not at one time on one road trip. I especially liked highway 20 in northern Nebraska, a real part of rural America which runs the entire width of the state. I probably have been on a lot of 20 east of the Great Lakes, but it would take more looking than I care to do tonight. Again, only in pieces and over a lot of trips.

I can vouch for US 20 in Western NY. My grandparents lived right off of that highway on the east side of Ripley, NY. Ripley is the first town in NY coming in from PA. Stop at Meeder's Restaurant
and have a meal and some fantastic pie.

Lots to see and do in that area. If you are interested in wineries, there is the Chautauqua Wine Trail . If you are there in the summer, you can find an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables. Noble Winery and Johnson Estate Winery are a couple of our favorites.

Westfield is next heading east. Another neat little town. Original home of Welch's.

Work your way up to Buffalo and see Niagara Falls!

We have done pieces of it over the years, but not the whole thing. If you decide to try it, please keep us apprised of your trip, preferably with pictures. We would be particularly interested as we try to stay off the Interstates when we take our long trips.

This past summer we took RT 20 from Central WY back to Chicago. Great ride. I would do it again without any reservations. Crossing NE is wide open and towns are small and far apart. But many towns have camping available in city parks. Some County Fair locations offer camping as well. Some were free, others ten bucks. I find you get a better understanding of what this country and it's people are all about, traveling the smaller routes.
