Road to Quartzsite, AZ in '06

Any other Airstreamers planning to be in area of Quartzsite or area this season? I'm planning to be there, and several years ago I counted five other AS there. It would be nice to get together there and maybe exchange some knowledge about the area and its requirements.

Boy, I wish! A couple of years ago, I accompanied my parents down there to their wintering location outside of Quartzsite (a little town called Brenda) in January. It was really, really pleasant, especially compared to the subfreezing temps here in Angel Fire!

What was doubly interesting for us was that the park they stay at needed people to serve up propane in exchange for a site. Oh, I drooled real fast! Think about it: We close this park for the worst of winter (to heck with the nutty skiiers) and move down there for a month or two. Hummmmmmmm!!

Airstreams in Quartzsite, first part of February.

There will be quite a few Airstreams in the Quartzsite area the first part of February. The region 12, 26th Natioal Hobo Rally will be held just west of Quartzsite, in Blyth, CA. Feb 5th - 11th. We stayed at Rice Ranch for a couple of nights prior to the rally last year. http://www.wbcci12.org/HoboFlyer.pdf

Yes, it's called the Black Rock RV Village, I believe. Pretty typical snowbird park: lots of retirees. I won't be able to do it for a couple of days (have to go out of town on work starting in just about a minute!), but I'll look up the URL for you when I get back.

We'll be there from Jan 16 thru Jan 24, staying a La Posa South. We're hoping to get a spot right on the La Posa/Rice Ranch property line so we can walk to most activities. Traffic at that time can be brutal!

This will be our first time! Is Lo Posa BLM land or what?

Yes, La Posa is the first BLM LTVA south of I-10. The entrance is on left about 1/2 mile south of I-10 on Hwy 95. You have to wind around to get to the area behind Rice Ranch, but it is far enough from I-10 and Hwy 95 where noise isn't an issue and dust usually isn't bad. The key is it is close enough to walk to a good portion of the areas, saving the need to find and fight for parking. We'll purchase a 2 week pass so we can dump and take on water.

I-10 becomes especially busy that time of year as most trucks opt for I-10 in lieu of I-40 to avoid weather issues in the mountainous areas. Consequently, noise from I-10 can be problematic and traffic around the truck stops can be unruly.

We've gone there in Jan the past 3 years but think we'll some thing different this one. It's a "must do" event at least once. Also a great Bluegrass show in Blyth some 20 miles away. Someone said there was a group of Vintage Airstreamers that meet there every year. Have no details , maybe someone here has some info.---pieman

The Hobo Rally is a WBCCI special event rally with separate Vintage parking, not a Vintage event.

Bob---I am aware of the Hobo Rally but the Blugrass festival has nothing to do with WBCCI. I have attended it the past 3 years and a row and plan to go again this year. It is held at the same place but at different dates. The Music festival is held the weekend of Jan 19-20-21 at the fairgrounds outside of Blyth. It is put on by the Southern Calif. Bluegrass Assoc. In the past this was the same weekend the big RV show is held in Quartzsite. Don't have the dates for the Hobo Rally but it is a different event.

The Airstream gathering I heard about is neither one either. It was my understanding that a group of vintage Airstreamers met and camped together every year south and east of Quartzsite out on BlM land. I was given directions to it but didn't want to drag my new trailer out there as it was quit some distance over a rough road. This had nothing to do with the Hobo Rally either. pieman

OK Mike, I think I understand your question now. In the past years there has been a "gathering of friends" near Quartzsite and prior to the Hobo Rally. Members of El Camino Real have attended and this unit is Vintage heavy, there have also been members of Northern California Unit (I don't know if they are Vintage heavy or not). I believe that this gathering has been somewhat organized by either Nor Cal or ECR in the past. There was some discussion about this event at the last ECR rally and I believe that Nor Cal was putting it together. Perhaps this is what you have heard about.

I had to go to Parker today at work. On my return trip I went through Quartzsite. Most of the open parking type places (edge of town) are around 10% to 20% full (rough quess), but there was a steady stream of RVers heading into town from several directions. After the first of the year I never go that route.
