rio grande valley.

we are thinking about leaving cold tennessee and staying a few weeks in the rio grande valley, tx. area for a few weeks i.e. weslaco, mcallen area.
we would very much appreciate any advice / suggestions for campgrounds and things to do.
thank you so much.

mANSFIELD IS LAID BACK OUT OF THE WAY AND QUIET. pADRE iSLAND IS TYPICAL BEACH PLACE....The whole Valley has increased in activity...traffic is a problem...one end to the other. To avoid it use the "Military Hiway" which is on the Border south of the Main HWY 83. Brownsville Zoo is great. The birding centers are unique if your into that. I lived in Weslaco to 25 years or so...and like that central part of the Valley. Your trip is in the middle of citrus harvest....enjoy some of that. The entire place is out of character this time of the year as well.....full, really full , of "Winter Texans." Watch out for vehicles with blue license plates driven by grey hairs.....the typical out of state winter visitor. Bridge traffic to Mexico is horrific....take a passport if going to Mexico. I suggest the Progresso Bridge...to the city of Nuevo Progresso..park this side right at the bridge....walk across to the shopping area, medical and restaurants....about 150 yards. I like to eat at Arturos' or Angels' in Progresso. If you have to drive across....Arturos' has guarded parking for you.
