Reservations Needed?

Purchased our 1st FC 28' AS! We are in Florida & planning on traveling West starting in April. My question: Since we aren't sure of our route & length of stay, will we have a difficult time finding campsites along the way without prior reservations? I know here in Florida we have a heavy "snowbird" season & campgrounds are full. Thanks!

Traveling west from Florida is like the whole country so it depends on where you plan to go. But for the most part, you usually can find campground space somewhere. However, if you plan to visit the major National parks or CA beach sites, it may be best to make reservations as the walk-up sites may be few and/or too short to fit your rig.

Also, arriving at a "no reservations" campground (or a campground with a mix of reservable and non-reservable sites) on a Monday through Thursday will just about guarantee you a place. The real challenge will be during holiday periods (e.g., Memorial Day, 4th of July, etc..,) and very popular spots (i.e., Yosemite, and the like) but if you are flexible and smart about how you travel, you will be just fine.

Other than the "big holidays" we never make reservations beyond our next spot.

April is about when the snowbirds flock back north, so that at least should be a non-issue in most southern campgrounds then.

One thing you might consider is, on the day before you leave a campground, call ahead to make a reservation where you'd like to stop for the night. No one ever said reservations have to be made weeks in advance. One day in advance works also, in most places. Better to find out if the "no vacancy" sign is hung out before you hit the road rather than finding out after driving all day.

What everyone else said.

Once I decide how far I want to drive, and the route I am going to take, I usually call in the morning for space available that evening.
