Recs on where to go near TX/OK/AR

Hi all,

Would love your input on nice places for a short weekend trip within about 2.5-3 hours of Dallas/Ft Worth! Often times our work schedule doesn't permit going much further, but we'd still like to get out!! Where are your favs?? We love trees, hills, and a little topography if we can get it!

Unfortunately, this part of the country has seen more rain this year than in decades and tons of the lakes, rivers, national parks, etc have been flooded on and off since May. Some of been damaged and have not yet reopened.

Look forward to hearing your ideas! And thank you

It's about four hours out, but Inks Lake State Park should not be missed.

I agree with all of the above and would add Arrowhead SP in Canadian, OK.

Work is never done, so take time to play!

Cooper Lake SP in Sulphur Springs Tx. Easy drive from DFW and a great weekend destination. We camp at South Sulphur unit. Nice wooded campsites. It's our go to close to home park. Probably camp there 4-5 times a year

We just spent Christmas at Mother Neff State Park. The lower part by the river is closed due to flooding, but the upper part is brand new. New headquarters, new campsites (very spacious), new restrooms.

Close in we like Cleburne SP and Lake Whitney SP. If you can get a long weekend, Beavers Bend in SE Oklahoma is in the woods with trout fishing 4 hours away and Palo Duro Canyon, Amarillo is 5.5 hrs and also should not be missed.

I've been to all those listed above and they are great parks. Lake Mineral Wells S.P. is very good with a Rail Trail that you can bike or walk on from Weatherford to Mineral Wells that's 20 miles long. Cell phone only works in part of the park. You may want to check out Kerrville-Schreiner Park (State Park at one time) (830) 257-5392. It has just about everything you would want in a park, trails (Very Very Good) pull thru, 50 amps, wild life, trees, Guadalupe River, hill country, and good shopping area near by. They just finished a River Trail (All Concrete) that extends from Park for 4 miles to Lower Park. Check the City of Kerrville website for details:

When we lived in Frisco, TX our weekend trips were restricted to the mainly north and east of the DFW or roughly 2 hours driving distance. There was no way I was going to tow through downtown Dallas on a Friday rush hour afternoon to hit parks south of us. We hit almost every state park northwest to northeast of Frisco. We also tried a few COE parks on the Oklahoma and Texas side of Lake Texoma. Now if you can take Friday off you can expand your range but limit Friday to 1/2 a day drive.

The furthest west we got was Arrrowhead State Park and the furthest east was Bob Sandlin State Park.

We purchased the annual Texas State Park pass. It pays for your daily park fee and you get some campsite discounts.

Go online to Texas State Parks and check out all the parks near you. We found all the state park campgrounds great.

Lake Degray is a few miles away from us. Nice Park, guaranteed Bald Eagle sightings. I have caught more fish from this lake than any other in the area. My favorite park is Petit Jean State Park. If you are coming from DFW, take I30 to Caddo Valley then north on Arkansas HWY 7. You will pass Lake Degray, up through Hot Springs, (there's a lot to see here too, I can help...), then continue on 7 up to Ola, or Pontoon. (both ways are beautiful). From DFW to Hot Springs is about 5 hr, and from Hot Springs to PJ is about 2. If you have the time it is a great place to see. If you decide to come up send me a PM.

I second Beavers Bend and Broken Bow Lake area of Oklahoma. One of the prettiest parts of OK.

The Wichita Mountains in OK are another good option, as well as Cedar Lake and Lake Murray (All in OK).
