Day 29 Eastward Ho! Begins

We will be packing up here in Auburn very shortly and heading down to Bakersfield to meet up with the NorCal Caravan back to Perry. We said our goodbyes last night, we will sure miss loving on those grandbabies. They are all a bundle of energy and all so lovable. Auburn is too far from Mount Olive, NC.
We will keep all posted on our adventure to Perry, GA. Does someone have a happy hour schedule for the International? If not lets get one started.

Happy trails to all on the road and to those planning to get on the road.

Made it to Orange Grove RV Park in Bakersfield

We headed out of Auburn after giving Brutus B and Carmen O a much needed wash. We drove down I-5 and across to Bakersfield via 58. We made it in to Orange Grove RV Park in Bakersfield and met our caravan leader Larry and his 19 ft. Bambi, and shortly afterwards David showed up with his 78 31' "Belize". Pictures below of caravan members parked in Orange Grove RV Park. Nice park with exceptionally clean bath rooms. You can pick oranges in season, unfortunately they are all green now. There was a little fruit and nuts store around the corner where we loaded up on some goodies for the trip across the desert.
We will meet the fourth member of our caravan in Laughlin.
Temperatures were in mid to upper 90's.

Bakersfield to Laughlin, NV

First day of caravan to Perry we had to fuel up while Larry and David headed out on 58 towards Don Laughlin's Riverside Resort and RV Park. Larry has an CB as do we and we couldn't raise him until we got close to Barstow. We were to meet at the Idle Spurs Steakhouse on old 58 in Barstow. We had a Garmen and it took us right to the restaurant while Larry and David took a tour of scenic Barstow. They finally got directions and met us there for a good lunch. We then continued our trip across the Mohave Desert. We arrived in Laughlin on fumes as there were no places to fill up with deisel. I did have a five gallon container in the truck just in case. We met the fourth member of our caravan George and his girlfriend Caty who are in a Land Yacht motor home. We all went in to the casino for the kick off banquet and had some great prime rib and great fellowship.
We will be departing here at 9:00 heading for Williams, AZ. It is a short trip up over the mountain across 58 and pick up I-40 again.

No luck posting photos, will try again later.

Pictures of Bakersfield to Laughlin, NV

Ah, sweet success at last.
First picture is at Orange Grove RV Park. Second is on 58 of the windmill generators.
Third is Carmen O at Orange Grove. The fourth is at The Idle Spurs Staekhouse in Barstow, CA (lunch)
Fifth is turning off of I-40 on to Rt 95 for Laughlin. Sixth is the caravaners at Don Laughlin's Riverside Resort and RV Park.

Temperatures today are expected to be 107 in Laughlin.

For the first time this trip we had to turn the AC on when we arrived yesterday but were able to sleep with windows open last night.

On to Williams and the Grand Canyon
Later.......

Mac and Linda,

I've been enjoying your adventure as well. You haven't had any of the troubles that Moosetags has had, but you're pace seems more hurried. We'll be in Perry too. Maybe we can connect then. Drive safely.

Aria, Bob and Randy and Pat,
Thanks for your comments, it has been a hurried pace with the exception of Auburn and that was all high energy excitement. I know it will slow down a bit - I am looking forward to Perry and meeting a buch of new folks and friends.
Mac and Linda

Haven't had a cahance to check on whether or not anything has been set as far as some Forums happy hours. Anyone know?

Laughlin,NV to Williams, AZ

We made it to Williams yesterday taking a longer route than anticipated. The plan was to head east out of Laughlin up over the mountain pass to Kingman, AZ. I kept telling our leader that the Garmin wanted to go north and we were heading south. We ended up getting on I 40 in Needles (about 60 extra miles) although it probably was an easier route.
We stopped for lunch in Seligman, AZ (Rt 66) and ate at the Roadkill Restaurant. It was fun watching the tourists taking pictures of the Airstrams parked in front of the restaurant. I wonder if they thought they were a part of the Rt 66 decor of the town. They had great food and an imaginative menu.
We made it into Williams and are staying at a new park GCRR RV Park right next to the train station. We will catch the train up to the Grand Canyon today and stay here one more night. Rate is 32 per night - very clean but no shade.
Temperature reached as high as 98 on the road yesterday.
More later, enjoy the pictures.

Grand Canyon

We took the train up to the Grand Canyon yesterday. We decided to upgrade to first class (wanted the skycar, but was full) and are glad we did - alot of room, air conditioned and free champagne on the way back.
It was absolutely spectacular!
"Belize" Dave was with us for the trip up and back and made us some of his special martini's when we returned to the campground - awesome!
Larry's decision to stop here was an excellent one indeed.

We are off to Gallup, NM today. More later, enjoy the pictures.

Pictures did not post will try again later.

Made it to Gallup, NM but had BLOW OUT in Holbrook, AZ

Tried pictures again but get kicked off the web page before they post.

We were 1/4 mile from Holbrook exit when I heard a loud pop, the first inclination was to look at the gages which were ok then I thought blow out on Carmen O - yep the front tire on drivers side. We proceeded to exit at 30 mph and could see a DQ to the left and a tire dealer right next to it. We pulled in and backed the good tire on to the Trailer Aid. I walked over to the tire store and the guy was reading a news paper. He came over and took the tire off and replaced it with another D load tire (Hercules) and off we went to Gallup.
I will post pictures of it when we get to a park with a stronger signal. We were towing at 55 mph (65lbs pressure) since we started the day but did stop at a state park where the road out had some cuts in the pavement that had not been repaired yet. The only thing I can think of is taht one of them may have begun a belt separation. The tire looked like it had been cut from rim to rim with the belt blown out.

The tire failure was a pain but it couldn't have happened at a better time or place. No damage to the trailer, thank goodness.

We are off to Santa Rosa today, hopefully without any additional incidents.

Mac and Linda

We stayed at USA RV park in Gallup, nice park will post pictures of it later. Also met another AS on the way to Perry who stayed here as well. They have a 2006 30' slide out.

BLOW OUT in Holbrook, AZ

A couple of questions re: the tire.....

1) Goodyear Marathon?

2) Is your trailer level or does it favor the axle where the tire blew?

3) You said 65# PSI.....is this cold?

We blew a tire (brand new Goodyear marathon) on the rear axle of Susan's trailer on our first big trip....the inner sidewall separated completely and it burned through the wheelwell and into the sub floor. Quite a stressful experience, but we were lucky to have pulled into a small campground that had a good restaurant and we just spent the night there.

Well, make that two blowouts in two days!

Today as we were going by exit 79 on I 40 east bound I heard another pop. This time on the same side only rear tire. Used the spare to get to a tire shop where I purchased three Cooper Trailer Masters. I had them check the other Continental tires, one of them had a bubble in it ready to go and the fourth tire looked ok. The tire shop was Coopers Cheap-o Tires in Milan, NM. One of two in the town that were open.

We made it to Santa Rosa with no further incidents. It was great having other caravaners to help locate tire dealers and to help change the tire on the edge of I-40.

On Star and AAA were of no timely help. We were done changing the tire before the local AAA service called us back. I would have probably benefitted from their service if we were out in no man's land on a Sunday or holiday.
I have pictures and will post when I have a stronger signal, perhaps tomorrow in Amarillo.

We are spending the night at the Santa Rosa Campground, nice campground with helpful and pleasant management.

Mac And Linda

The bad tires were Continental, the trailer was level and there was 65 pounds cold tire pressure in the tires.
