Home for a short time - then on to NY and Maine

We hope everyone enjoyed the 4th. It was a good day to be on the road as there was not much traffic, even on I 95.

We made it home after a rather uneventful trip. We left at 7:45 am and arrived home about 6:30 pm. We stopped for about an hour and a half to have a sadwich and walk Buckeye near Florence, SC.

Everything is in pretty good shape here but the grass is a little high due to all the rain in NC lately.

Our stay in Perry was very enjoyable especially visiting with old friends and making new ones during various happy hours (ENCU, Maryland, VAC). The ten days we spent there went all to quickly.

Some folks battled the ants the whole time they were there. We put some diatemacious eath down around the tires, hoses and cord. They showed up one morning after which I sprayed the stabilizer bars with Black Flag and had no more problems with them.

We will check in on Linda's folks in Wilmington, unload a few things gathered on our trip then reload a few things to take to our daughter in Bah Habah who is expecting her first in October. We are looking forward to spending some quiet time at Lake George and then go to Maine for a good visit with our daughter and son in law as well as have some great Maine lobster.

The summer is passing all too quickly. This work thing is getting in the way of enjoying our Airstream.

Later........

Thumbs up

Mac, does anybody else sport such a nearly complete map? Don't overlook the NE Iowa bluff country if you try to fill it in completely!

Map

Bob,
I am sure there probably are some more filled in, I'm just trying to catch up with them. I sure will include the NE Iowa Bluff country on the next trip west. I also would really like to get back to Minnesota and do some serious fishing.

On the Road Again (sound familiar?) - Heading North to the COOL!

Well the adventure continues tomorrow. We are off to Martinsburg, WV to see my 90 yr old uncle .
Tuesday we will stop and see a former baseball player of mine while I was at UMES 20 years ago (he has a brain tumor and has had at least three operations and a stroke to boot - great kid and a tremendous competitor).

Then it will be on to Hyde Park, NY to see some very good (long time) friends. We will probably camp in their driveway for a couple of nights.

Linda would like to go and see Valkill, Elenor Roosevelt's house and grounds on 9-G in Hyde Park while we are there.

The plan is that we head for Salisbury, MA (Black Bear Campground - anyone been there?) on Thursday and arrive at our daughter and son-in-laws on Friday in Bar Harbor. We have not seen them since their wedding in Bar Harbor last September. We can't wait to see them as well as have some lobster.

The Adventure Continues......Harper's Ferry KOA, Hyde Park, NY

Well after a few issues with Verizon and some computer glitches we are back on line.
The first night we made the trip from Mount Olive to Harpers Ferry without any issues, although one of the Pressure Pro sending units kept going off (false alarm). I would check tire pressures occasionally by plugging in the unit and unplugging to keep the false alarms from going off.

We visited my Uncle and returned to the KOA (President's Award winner) in Harper's Ferry. It is actually inside the trenches of a civil war gun site in Bolivar Heights. Pretty decent campground ($36 - see pictures)

The next morning we left and headed up the road to Keymar, MD to stop and see one of my former players. We located his house and left several messages on his answering machine but never got to see him. His house was located on a hill overlooking a narrow country lane (I wasn't sure I would be able to turn around and hoped that the road connected to another and didn't dead end (whew! it did).

We continued on our way after a brief conversation with the mail lady who confirmed that he did live there and she had seen him out on his golf cart the day before. (He did call my cell later to sa he was sorry he missed us - maybe we can stop by on the way back south).

Next stop Hyde Park, NY (childhood home and stomping grounds until college)

We camped for a couple of nights in a long time friend's driveway and visited. We also visited Val-Kill, Elenor Roosevelt's cottage and retreat. It was very interesing having seen her when I was in jr high at a school assembly. She is the only First Lady to have a national site. It is worth the effort to visit. We also stopped at the FDR National Historic site to see the new Wallace center, impressive!

We also stopped briefly at the Vanderbuilt Mansion on our tour of Hyde Park.

Hyde Park, NY to Circle 9 RV Ranch, Concord, NH

The weather cooled off on Wednesday night after a front went through.

On Thursday we were on our way up 9-G across the Rip Van Winkle Bridge at Catskill, NY. Then up the New York Thruway to I 787 to Troy and Route 7 to Bennington, VT. We picked up US 9 and took it across Vermont to Concord, New Hampshire where we stayed at the Circle 9 RV Ranch. ($36.00)
Not a bad place to spend the night, they have a lot of permanent residents there. It was an easy and scenic drive with little traffic except in the small towns where things were a little congested. It was worth missinng the Boston traffic.

Weather stayed cool and low humidity - no AC needed.

Concord, NH to Bar Harbor, ME

We left the Circle 9 and continued across NH on Rt 4 to Portsmouth and get on I 95 North. The traffic on I 95 was not too bad for a Friday morning, heavier from Portsmouth to Portland than north of Portland. We took I 95 rather than I 295 which I remember from last year as being very busy with a lot of on ramps.

We made it into our daughter and son-in-laws about 3:00 pm.

Good news - bad news.

The good news was that we found their residence down a narrow dirt road, the bad news was that there was no where to turn around. So I had to back Carmen O back down the dirt road about a quarter of a mile then turn around and back Carmen O back down the road and negotiate two turns to get into their drive way and our parking spot. It was very tight but made it, finally with only one scratch from a branch. It was a real test of my backing ability, it also was a great help to have eyes (son-in-law) in the back and Linda to hold branches back.

Once we got set up we all went over to Abel's Lobster Pound for dinner outside overlooking Sommes sound. The lobster, fellowship and view were exceptional.

Bar Harbor and Maine

We are enjoying Bar HArbor and Mount Desert Island. The low temps are mid to upper 50's and daytime might get up to 80. Great sleeping weather - no AC!

On Saturday we went to Southwest Harbor to see what was left of the Pink Flamingo Festival. We missed the parade but they (flamingos) were everywhere. The originator of the Pink Flamingo resides in Southwest Harbor. The Coast Guard Station also held an open house so we stopped in to visit the Coasties and wish them well. (our son is a Coastie, flying C-130's out of Sacramento).

After church on Sunday we enjoyed a sandwich on the town green (see pictures) and a laid back afternoon just visiting.

On Monday I took Buckeye to Echo Lake for a swim. No one else around Ike's Point - a little early for swimming. We listened to the loons and Buckeye sharpened his retreiving skills with a dummy duck.

Monday afternoon we went on a shopping trip to Elsworth and order some tires for Brutus B.

We are enjoying our stay, the weather has been awesome, the campground (kids driveway)is super quiet with only one camper.

We will adventure into Bar Harbor for some blueberry pancakes at Jordan's, a local restaurant.

Back on The Road Again

Well, it was a good week in Bar Harbor but it went all too fast. We painted the laundry room and bath room and Linda made curtains for the baby's room, laundry room and M&M's room. We finished the week by attending our friend's church in Manset, then doing a little sight seeing at Seawall and Bass Harbor. We had our last lobster at the Main Luau in Trenton, had a nap, played miniature golf at Pirate's Cove and the went to Cadillac Mountain for the magnificent sunset.

We are on our way to Gorham, NH for Timberlan Camp Ground.

Bar Harbor to Gorham, NH

We pulled Carmen O out of her camping spot a whole lot easier than when we arrived 10 days ago. We had an 8:30 appointment to have a new Reese weight distribution and dual cam anti sway hitch put on. The hitch we had on, an original Reese with Dual cams from 24 years ago was showing signs of wear and the trunions were slightly bent.

We went north on Alt 1 to Bangor and picked up I 95 to Waterville - good roads. We took 201 north to Skowhegan and picked up Rt 2. Rt 2 for the most part was pretty good, a few trucks and other campers. We saw another Airstream heading east on Rt 2 (2513, I think).

We arrived at Timberland CG at about 3:30 in the afternoon. The campground is pretty quiet and well kept. ($28 with Good Sam)

5. Rest Area along RT. 2 on the banks of the Androscoggin River

Today we will be taking Rt 2 to Montpelier, VT and pick up I 89 to Burlington. We will then pick up Rt 7 south and head over to Lake George, just south of Ticonderoga, NY

Gorham, NH to Lake George, NY

The plan was to take Rt 2 to Burliington then RT 7 south and cross the bridge at Chimney Point and into Ticonderoga. We had a good trip across Rt2 until I went the wrong way (south) on I-91. We decided to take RT 302 to Barre and Montpelier, VT. That road had to be the roughest road our entire 12,000 miles. Doors were open our strackable containers fell over and the clothes spilled onto the floor and the mirror in the bathroom came unglued from its backing and fell to the floor (but didn't break).

Once we got to Montpelier we got on I 89 to Burlington. It was a beautiful drive through the White Mountains although the peaks were covered with clouds. The trip through NH and Vermont was very picturesque and the weather was great.

We crossed the bridge on RT 17 at Chimney Point and got some good pictures of Lake Champlain and the valley.

We got to Ticonderoga and stopped at Wal Mart to do some shopping and I adjusted the Reese Hitch. The front of the camper was about three inches higher than the rear. so I un hooked her and dropped the hitch down one hole (bottom one) and remeasured with the hitch on and the front was approximately 1/4" higher. Any feedback here?

We then proceeded to Linda's folks place on Lake George and set up for our 10 day stay.
