Rare sight

There are now more melanistic deer alive in Central Texas than in every other part of the planet combined. Melanism is actually fairly common in all or parts of eight counties of Texas: HAYS, Travis, Comal, Williamson, Blanco, Guadalupe, Burnet and Caldwell.

I took this shot a few minutes ago through the tinted window in our breakfast room, so it is not perfect photography. We have been watching this little buck ever since he was born in our back yard. This spring, he is sporting about 6" antlers, still in the velvet. The doe that dropped him is darker than most, but not black like this guy. The doe in the photo is not his dam.

Just had to let folks see him.

KTA! They are cute...deadly cute. Deer, free ranging are impacted by motorcyclists and vehicles. Motorcyclists rarely are unhurt. Cars have something like millions of dollars. It is illegal to keep the meat.

They are also eating all the wonderful gardens being installed by the neighborhood gardeners. This reduces their natural fear of man and our contraptions.

But they are cute.

Very interesting! How lucky you've been able to see him grow up.
Any idea why melanism is not more widespread?

It baffles me why it should be mostly in this area.

BTW, when this little buck was a fawn, he had no spots. Just a uniform dark brown all over. He grew darker as time went on.

Occasionally I will see a black squirrel or a white skunk around here.

Thumbs up

We Camped at Sampson SP, Seneca Lake NY many times. At first we thought we were seeing something very rare.
Maybe so elsewhere, but very common in this area.
Check out the Gallery photo's on the website.

There was a white dear in Wayne County, TN where I lived some 15 years ago. Then when I moved to Oak Lane (a street lined with huge oak trees) we had a white squirrel in our yard for about a year until it was killed by a car. I enjoyed the novelty of each.

Great pictures....was in Texas in April and saw a LOT of deer (fortunately not in front of my car). I'd never seen a Javalina until spending 4 days at Big Bend. These things are really ugly -- and they were totally unafraid of wandering through the park. My basset hound was much more interested in the rabbits...(fortunately).

Very cool - thanks for sharing! We spotted an albino cow elk in the Jemez Mountains of NM a few years back.

Well - some would argue that without pictures there is no proof ;-)

Not me, of course - but "some" people :-)

The black buck has grown tame enough to eat corn that I scatter around my feet. I could reach down and touch his stubby horns. He is afraid of the bigger does and they will kick at him and drive him away.

A second yearling buck has started to come by for corn. This one is solid brown, unlike the does and the black buck. Probably a cross between a black buck and a normal doe.
