Looking for route recommendations from Rapid City, SD to Fishing Bridge CG in Yellowstone NP. My app is showing I 90 to Ranchester, and then Hiway 14 as the preferred route. Several other more southerly routes appear available, as well. Any recommendations on the best route for sites and road conditions? Probably commit a day and a half to the drive. Thanks!
Highway 14 through Dayton/Ranchester, or Highway 16 through Buffalo is "six of one, half dozen of the other". Everyone has their preferences. I prefer Highway 16, but I'm biased, as I drive it several times a week. I'd suggest studying some maps, and see what there is along each route that would interest you, and pick that route.
Devils Tower National Monument is just a short detour off I-90 at Sundance, WY (about 35 drive minutes each way). If you choose to take US-14 and Alternate US-14, Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area is a short detour off Alternate US-14 from just east of Lowell, WY. The canyons aren't as impressive as the Grand Canyon, but they're worth a brief visit in my opinion.
