Provo, UT to Jackson, WY

I'd appreciate input on the best Airstream route from Provo, UT to Jackson, WY.
The plan is to visit Grand Tetons then go on to Yellowstone. My GPS is routing me through Idaho to Jackson. And when I ask my GPS for a route directly from Provo to Yellowstone, it routes me through Wyoming. Anybody??

The way we go, is through Logan, Bear Lake, Montpelier and up 89 to Jackson Hole.

Hey, Thanks, Bill. I-15 to 89 looks like a good route. What is 89 like? Mountains to cross??

You are in Utah and Wyoming, of course there are mountains. One between Brigham City and Logan, another before Bear Lake, one after Montpelier and then you follow the Snake after Alpine. Last time we went north from Montpelier to Soda Springs and then 34 over to 89, no traffic and a pretty road.

We would do a lot to avoid the Wasatch Front traffic on I-15. What about taking HY 189 most of the way? Head up Provo Canyon to Heber City, then the combined HY 40/189 to I-80 at Silver Creek junction (exit 146) then the combined 189/I-80 east to Evanston, WY; then east of Evanston, leave I-80 and take 189 north to Jackson. This is a reasonably direct route, and we've been over it at one time or another.

The terrain is mountainous but no huge passes. Nothing you can't handle. It's the city freeway traffic that bothers us! Western Wyoming is the Big Empty, though-- so I would suggest just keeping an eye on your gas gage and comfort stops.

You will miss a lot of beautiful country by not going thru Logan, UT.

They both look like good routes, each with their own advantages. I guess that is why my GPS returned both routes: 89 to Yellowstone and 189 to Jackson. I'll leave the decision till morning. Thanks for the input, folks.

Well, it turned out that the best way for me was I-15 through Salt Lake City to Idaho Rapids, then Rte 26 into Jackson Hole. Except for a little traffic around SLC, the scenery was great and the ride enjoyable. Again, thanks for the input…….
