Propane is sold by the pound in lieu of gallon because they can weigh the stuff rather than measure the liquid. Your tank may not be completely empty but you can't see it, but you can weigh it.

The price fluctuates a lot. Hard to say what a good price is because it depends on how and where you buy it. for instance right now in Roseburg OR the price varies between 2.79 and 3.79 per gallon. I weigh my 10 gallon aluminum tanks to be sure its empty before I detach and go find a good price. And I use a bathroom scale to keep track of whether its full or half full etc because my guage is old. So lesson learned I think is record the weight of your tank empty and full and record what propane weighs per gallon. So you can know when it needs filling and avoid unnecessary trips to find propane. Too much work? Can you rely on your guage and your switch over device? I cannot and I like knowing the details. Thats why they call me the Bosun (Boatswain).

$1.15 per gallon in Bend, OR @ Oregon Farm & Pet near the Old Mill. $2.60 per gallon here in Sierra Vista, AZ. The prices vary depending on geography.

Here in the wilds of N. Calif. they seem to charge depending on how cold it is outside! A few weeks ago it was $1.89 at the hardware store until we had a cold snap and now it is $2.29 per gallon. If sold by the gallon the meter must correct for temperature because propane expands and contracts a lot, that might be why this store raised the price, they have a simple meter that gives bigger gallons when it's cold outside. I think there is about 4 pounds per gallon as they call a 5 gallon bottle a 20 pounder and a 100 pound one a 20 gallon.

Recent fillups for 30-pound tank (7-7.1 gallons):
$13.60 at Tractor Supply in Olympia, WA
$23.50 at KOA in Las Cruces, NM
$20.00 at Ace in Rockport TX with Ace courtesy card

It does vary widely by source at any location, pays to check around.

TSC (Canadian version of Tractor Supply but separate company) seems to be the best deal in our area of Southern Ontario. Last time I had a 20lb BBQ cylinder filled it was $12 CDN plus tax.

I fill up at a U Haul newer my house.

Click the link and put in a zip code and it will tell you where the nearest one is and the price (at least it does in the North East) Good for comparison.

Wow, I'm surprised how much propane varies, from $ 8.00 for 30 lbs in Cumming Georgia to $56.00 for 30 lbs in Sandy Oregon. It does pay to shop around. I thought it would be more consistent than this. Please keep posting prices and locations so we all can benefit. Thanks RandyNH for the propane link.

A empty 30lb tank only holds approximately 7 gallons. Should only cost between $15-$20 to fill one.

30.00 to fill empty 30# in northern Illinois when I've refilled. I don't think I've ever paid less than 25.00 anywhere. Must be going to all the wrong places but sometimes it is whatever is sort of near. I get a little nervous traveling with refill wedged between front seat and dash

I live in Fountain Valley, CA, and for years I've filled up at a station for the same price of $3.50 per gallon. Recently, I discovered the Shell station across the street from it (corner of Talbert & Magnolia) charges $1.50 per gallon. I thought it was somehow mis-priced, but that's what they have charged the last few times I've filled up there. (In California they do add sales tax of 7.75% to the purchase price.)

In Alaska this spring, I paid $2.80 per gallon at a Fred Meyer station.
