Portland OR to Cannon Beach OR best route

Does anyone have a recommendation on the best route from Portland to Cannon Beach?

Well there is basically one direct route...Hwy 26 West thru Beaverton to the cost & Hwy 101. Turn south...CB is a couple three miles. For the scenic route Hwy 30 North along the Columbia to Astoria then S is a nice drive and the Lewis & Clark National Historic park is a worthwhile stop.

you didn't mention if you're in the Interstate or not. If so hwy 6 to Tillamook , N thru Manzanita to CB is also a nice drive. Not so much as a TV.

Oregon Unit Airstream rally in Cannon Beach next weekend so there will be a lot of aluminum in town.

If you have time and want to go through the wine country, you can go SW on 99W from Portland through McMinnville and go west to the coast, then north on 101 to Cannon Beach. Not sure about campgrounds on this longer route, but it would be fun IMO if you have the time. This longer route would involve about triple the distance (or more), however, from what CruizinDux just recommended (26 directly to the coast).

This Google Terrain view (hopefully) will show you the mountains in the way of other semi-direct routes:

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Port...45.8917738!3e0

Edit -- no Terrain view, so go to the extreme upper left, click on Menu, and select Terrain.

Bob, how about cutting down from 26 to 6 and going through Tillamook? Anything worthwhile to see on that more rural road?

Thanks,

Peter

You could take the scenic route through Mist. Slow going, but beautiful.

I think the route out 84 to 97, up through Washington, across the border, over to Banff, up to Jasper, back down through Kamloops to Seattle, with a spin around the Olympic NP and a nice drive down the coast to Cannon Beach. Would make for a nice adventure. Cannon Beach RV park is a nice place. Enjoy the trip and travel safe. Pat

It has been years and I was driving a Volvo XC, not towing then....stopped to u-pick blueberries

We have friends with a beach house in Manzanita and approach via Salem & 22 from the S up thru Hebo to Tillamook and up to Manzanita. 22 heading W carries a lot of varied traffic. Most turn off to Lincoln City tho. 22 towards Hebo is a wonderful Oregon country road. Once on 101 It's a good road with some semi traffic but it flows great. Very scenic and rural then at Tillamook loosely follows the coast N. No shortage of hikes, smal towns and stops.

re the McMinnville...Dundee is ground zero...not quite the zoo that Napa/Sonoma tends to be but plenty of variety in wine offerings. There are a few RV parks int eh area and 'd plan on a couple of days to explore.

Yep, and some folks might meander a bit longer. Easy to get distracted. But if the direct route is all there is time or budget to cover, Cannon Beach is a great destination.

Travel Safe. Pat

We take 26 to 101. Friend of ours prefers going up I5 to longview WA then over through Astoia. Takes longer but she thinks 26 is too windy. Enjoy! Weather should be nice starting Monday.

Glad to hear you are on to the beach. Good choice not taking Hwy 6.
