the maps in the tomtom systems are horrific. there good units with poor maps. k.

I received my Garmin 360 last week. I've only used it locally, but I can see this being a very nice addition to our trips. Just those times were you wonder if the next town has fuel or not, or finding the nearest place for supplies will be nice. You can even pull up the POI and dial it through your blue tooth feature. I didn't need the features, but I'll use them and the price was right. I selected the Aussie voice as others on here suggested.

I received a Garmin Nuvi 200 as a gift last week and wonder how we ever got
along without one!
We used it to travel back home from a trip to Florida and were amazed at the wealth of information regarding area points of interest.
We found it especially useful for locating grocery stores and gas stations since we did not have to guess how far off the interstate these places were located.

We have a Garmin Nuvi 660. We have had it for 18 months, and have used it extensively all over the country. We have found it to work great and we love the wide screen. We don't always agree with the 660's route, but that's easy enough to overcome. It has all the bells and whistles.

We like the flat shape of the 660 which allows us to easily take the unit with us on foot which makes it really useful when hiking or kayaking.

Admittedly, it's a high-priced unit. The best price that we could find 18 months ago was $720. I guess this isn't so bad when you consider the GM GPS option costs $2,200, and the unit is not as capable and you can not take it on a hike. The really good news for someone wanting a really good GPS is that last week I saw the Nuvi 660 on Amazon for $350.

The Nuvi 660 mounts nicely below dash level on our Suburbans. I don't care or a GPS mounted on the dashboard.

Why do you think the maps are horrific? There is a feature for users to add updates and to change your map. And you can update your maps every week. (or more)

What happened to make you think that?

Just like cell phones--how did we get along without these? I have a Caliber p-3600. I got it on e-bay for 145. Great battery life and thin enough to fit in your pocket. I have set it at the trailhead and hiked for 1 1/2 hours to a fishing spot. I knew the way so I tested the accuracy of the unit. It works very well for hiking. On the road it is flawless except in NYC, too many tall buildings.

Well I'm looking for a unit now, have an old Magellan in one of the planes.
Now that "hands free" phones are required in July in Ca. I'm thinking of going that way. I really do not like phone conversation while driving tho.

So I heard about this new unit-
GPMS technology
always correct directions
programable with your spouses voice
stays on all the time (no mute button)
research on reliability indicates that unreliable directions may be given for a period of 3-5 days monthly and during that time voice seems somewhat curt.

Yep, I've used this unit before:
When you go by a turn it tells you to pull over and ask for more accurate directions.
When you question its accuracy it shuts down and goes into power save mode.
Restaurant choices are never what you like.
Those 3-5 days monthly are always during a vacation.
When you try a new button it says that function not allowed at this time.

I have a TomTom One from Walmart ($168) Works great and has a nice female english accent. Easy to use and accurate. I will not travel without it and I no longer need mapquest on the internet.

Check out the Garmin GPSMAP 60Cx

I've found a garmin 250w wide screen for $199 on line. I think that I might go for the 260 if I could find a good deal on one. Any suggestions?

Charlie,
If you are considering a GPS for recreational use as well as road navigation, you should strongly consider the Garmin GPSMAP 60Cx. It has a new high sensitivity receiver that gives much improved signal reception in high canyons, forest canopies, etc.. It is waterproof and is less than half a pound. It has numberous features among them an electronic compass and barometric altimiter. You can load lots of Topo maps onto the 64 MB microSD card, but if you get this unit, you should consider getting a 1 gig card. With the right maps loaded you can get basic road navigation.
The best part is you can buy it at Amazon as a Garmin factory refubished unit for $249. Or, if you want to stretch your budget, it can be had new for $265.99.

A word of caution about Garmin units with barometric altimeters. They DO NOT function accurately inside a vehicle. I can make the altitude reading on my Garmin 76S jump up and down by several hundred feet simply by rolling the windows up and down on my car at 70 mph.

I recently brought my Garmin Nuvi 660 on a Delta Airlines Flight between Atlanta, Georgia and Flint, Michigan. I turned it on when we were flying at an assigned altitude of 30,000 feet and air speed of 500 mph.

The Garmin showed us at 29,950 feet, traveling at 502 mph.

Yeah ... but what would it read if you rolled the windows up and down?

The Nuvi units get their altitude from the GPS and not a built in pressure sensor. Much better for use inside a vehicle. I played with my 76S on an airplane as well, and it read a steady 5,000 feet once the cabin was pressurized, no matter what the actual altitude.

I, too, have one of those models. It only has one button...but it's hard as the devil to find in the dark!

Which units let you chose truck routes

I have read quite a few threads and remember seeing something about truck routes which will keep you off narrow roads, etc. But I can't find which brand/model has the option?
We are goin to New Zealand next year and want to take our own GPS, rather than rent for $200. Any suggestions?

There are NO WIDE roads in New Zealand in fact ALL the bridges are single lane with yield signs if you are the one required to stop. On the west coast of the South island I found one bridge that gave me the right of way but did not tell me what to do about the train.

The second picture is the new main road across the south island. It is 2 lane and 16% grade.

Take what you will want to keep with you because once there you may not want to come back. I discribe NZ by the fact that thier public bathrooms are cleaner than any hospital you will find here.

PM me if you want additional info.

Good Trip
