point mugu st park so. calif

Just got home from my first trip. After all these months working on my AS everyday. Finally got to enjoy it. Fairly close to where I live is a beach called thonrhill Broome. it is near the los angeles/ventura county like. We have always loved to go their as its close but you park right at the sand. Primitive sites no hookups. Had a great time. I told my wife that I would only work on the trailer if something broke. All went smooth. For me it was much needed rest. The trailer was so cozy, I napped 3 times on Sat. The surf fishing was terrible as I knew it would be.. One super small perch. But "The worst day fishing is better than the best day working". We ate like royalty, filet mignon and lobster tails 2 nights in a row. Here are some photos of our weekend...thanks to everyone on here who helped me get my trailer going and was patient and kind enough to share there knowledge.

Awsome!
I used to go tent camping there many, many, many years ago. Caught a 2ft. tiger shark, fishing off the beach one time.

Been there at the Pt Magu Naval Base

Nice. Ed, I used to go to the Naval base / Air Station all the time. You need to run that up Route 1 to Montery and back down the 101 on a nice weeklong trip. I was stationed at Monterey for two years and lived in Big Sur! Great pictures.

Ive caught fish there

I have a photo of a 4 foot sand shark I caught there a few years ago. but this weekend I caught a 6" surf perch with a 15 foot pole hehehe. We did see and hear numerous f-18's making there way to and from the base. Thats always nice to see.
Years ago there were openings in the fence and people would park and go through your campsite to the beach. Or less desireable people would come through at night and try steal stuff.. Last year I caught a guy stealing my firewood. I was sleeping sound when I went outside and started to yell at him. I remember telling him he could have the wood but it was $100 a log. He dropped the wood and ran. Good thing he was harmless..
anyways Since the fence has been sealed it has kept out the "riff-raff". Thats what the wife and me call the campers who are up to 3 am drinking and yelling. Or the ones who come in to steal stuff.. I like to turn in early so I can be fishing well before sunrise.
ANyways we were the only airstream there this weekend. obviously ours shined out like a star. I did hear some people comment when they walked by and I heard one person say "Oh my god look at those tanks" heheh I was hoping to hear something like that.

You don't need a haircut! This is the BEACH...CALIFORNIA...you fit right in!!!

Even if the fishing wasn't so great, you did a great job of celebrating your Airstream's maiden voyage. Here's wishing you and yours many happy trips in your beautiful AS!

Cheers, Dee

2 week later same place

Just got back from another weekend at point mugu. This time we had use of the bathroom.. To bad it leaked a bit on the way home. Im sure it will get fixed sooner than later. Anyways just wanted to post some more pictures of my adventure. Amazing how 2 weekends at the beach oxidized my new worthington tanks. Lots of work ahead still hehehe
The sealife was awesome. Saw maybe 100 dolphins in real close a bunch of seals. And I love to see the pelicans diving like dive bombers for fish. This time there were alot of baitfish in the water. Hence all the activity. At one point I could see the anchovies jumping out of the waves. Pretty cool.
Of course all I caught was one sand shark and I couldnt even get a picture of it as my line snapped on the rocks...Big fish caught with no photo proof are always lies..

Ahhhh, I miss those beaches

Hey Ed, I grew up in So Cal (Irvine area). I miss those kind of days / evenings. Looks like you guys had a great time. I used to ride my motorcycle by Pt. Magu all the time (after coming down from the canyons). Great area.

Ed,

We took our '70 Overlander to the beach for 2 weeks last summer (Vancouver Island), but we sure were'nt using gear like that!! What the heck do you guys catch out there?

We flyfish the pink salmon in August. Already made plans for this mid August.

Ken that big fishing pole

Is basically just to be able to whip it out past the waves and keep the line high up in the air... The fishing used to be good there when I was a kid. now besides using light gear and fishing the surf for small perch. I toss a 10 oz. weight out past the waves and try to catch a shark or ray. Just for the heck of it. Basically the fishing isnt great there but since im camping at the beach I might as well try...Here is a picture of what I really use for fishing...

Great spot and pics Ed, we camped at local beaches here in San Diego through winter (purchased Bambi in October) and will keep this in mind for future trip. Would like to know if dogs are allowed and if this can be reserved in advance, or first come basis?

Thanks and enjoy your Airstream!

Hi BArb

Reservations are needed for any weekends from april though labor day. Last time I checked the weekend after labor day is still available. You have to book through reserve america. If im correct they let you book up to 9 months in advance. To get weekends in the summer thats pretty much what you have to do. It does seem that during the week you could always get a spot... Hope to see you up here sometimes. Both times I went I was the only Airstream. Yes dogs are allowed
Take care
Ed
