Interesting thread... we are also planning a trip starting at the Region 10 rally in Oregon May 30, then through southern Idaho and Wyoming and on to visit friends in Rapid City SD. My question is.... we will then head south into Colorado and over the hills to Moab. This will be in June and our first time, so which route should be avoided or which used? I have a RV Trip Wizard plan in place taking us south to Ft Collins and Horsetooth Reservoir then west across Hwy 70 to Canyonlands RV Park or Spanish Trail RV park. Never been there so wondering if roads are okay for towing (assuming so).

We will then head to Golden Spike RV park (Promontory Point) and begin our trail back home. Thoughts/insights on this?

After going through Idaho to Oregon, on your way back, take a day and go up Hwy 55 to McCall, Idaho. If you are headed to Moab, then take I84 South to Salt Lake, then Hwy 3 to I75 to the Moab exit.

My wife and I were in that area in late October last year. We spent 2 nights at gouldings in monument valley. We took an 8 hour tour with native guide into the back sections of the valley. Climbed on sandstone cliffs and arches. Looked into ancient anastazi ruins. Stood next to tons of petroglyphs. It is all tribal land, and just spectacular. I was like a kid in a candy store. We did Santa fe, mesa verde, four corners, grand canyon south rim, but I loved monument valley. Was told that arches and canyonlands us monument valley, but on steroids. Will have to make that another trip. The one thing you will find, is that you will need more time. Have a great trip!

Thanks Normandgrace. Agree, will need more time. This trip is more of a recon visit. However I will keep your back country info as we really enjoy those kind of getaways. Sure to return.

Stayed at Wind Whistle BLM land a little out of Moab. Well worth the drive out to Needles outlook. BLM area free access to see into Canyonlands Needles area.

1st shot is from Needles Outlook (BLM land no fee)

2nd is a site and the area around Wind Whistle campground.

Have a great trip

Good choice! We've gone a bit further into the BLM Canyon Rim area several times, and stayed at Hatch Point. This little primitive CG has never had more than a few other campers when we've been there. Often we've had it to ourselves.

Bring your own water.

Just got this newsletter today from the Canyonlands Natural History Association.
