Planning a trip to Niagara, any advice?

Hey everyone,

The wife has put me in charge of planning our summer trip this year(what could go wrong). We have decided to go to Niagara Falls. It would probably be a full week long trip. Living in Central Illinois, we would like to stop at Jackson Center along the way, or way back and check out the factory. Have been looking at campgrounds around Niagara and have found they are pricey. Has anyone stayed near there, and how were the CP's? I would appreciate any suggestions for stops along the way or near our destination.

Niagara Falls is a great place to experience. The Canadian side has the best views and commercial development. Also venture down the Niagara Parkway to Niagara on the Lake which is a 30 min scenic drive.

Page and I visited there for the first time this past Sept. We stayed at the KOA on Grand Island and were very well treated - we had some feedback from other campers who stayed at the Good Sam and they said they wished they had stayed at the KOA also.

As we had never been there, we signed up for the combination tour package - in our case we saw the Canadian side in the afternoon-evening, then the American side the next morning. We're glad we did both; a little pricey, but how often do you get there, right?

When we visited the Falls, we stayed at Glenview RV, on the Canadian side. It was nice, and not crowded. Just a short drive to beautiful little city of Niagara-on-the-Lake, a must see.

We purchased a package ticket which took us to all of the major attractions, Maid of the Mist, etc. The folks at the RV park were very helpfull with where to park free and take the "trolly" which was included in the ticket.

We were there nearly a week.

Everything around Niagara Falls is a tad pricey.

We stayed at the Niagara Falls KOA in Ontario about 8 years ago. It was a nice campground with friendly staff. From what I remember, the campsites were kinda close to each other, but not oppressively so. Lots of help in getting tickets for the attractions, directions, places to park, etc. The campground was clean, and for all the people and families there, really quiet at night. I think they took “quiet time” seriously. We stayed there 4 or 5 days.

If you venture into Canada, remember your passports! Also, if you bring a pet, bring up to date vaccine records. US customs asks for them sometimes to prove ownership and that the pet was visiting Canada and not being imported into the States. We've had to show the records for our dogs twice over the years. Oh, and don't carry firewood over the border either. Words of experience here.

Have a great trip! The volume of water will blow you away.

Here is our trip report from a couple years back;

Great will have fun!

Of course, we came in from the east, but the area around Niagara applies.

PM me if you need more specifics.

You could try camping at Hamlin Beach State Park, NY. Located along Lake Ontario.
